As long as the songs aren’t played for close to their full term as Brisbane did on the weekend, when a post Cameron goal rendition was still playing just as the Bulldogs goaled at the other end🤦‍♂️

That’s the crowd continuing to sing after the song.

I'm agnostic on the issue. It doesn't move the needle for me, but we're also not going to come back from it. It's part and parcel of the gameday experience and theatrics.

I just don't really see how some people are so passionate about an audio excerpt that's < 30 seconds long.

It adds to the worsening experience of going to the footy. They already blare [censored] through the speakers way too loud during the breaks as it is and have these pathetic "fan activations", it detracts from the natural atmosphere of the game, and when we are playing in a barren MCG of around 20k people and have just kicked a goal to reduce the margin to 45 points with 10 minutes left it will just feel depressing.

But sure, progress and all that 🙄🤣

The social aspect of the game is diminishing and it feels more like an interactive video game machine you step into at Timezone when you walk through the gates. Can't even have a conversation at half time because something is blaring or they're doing one of those stupid 'are you paying attention' things.

I’d be happy if we could have a latter day Leonard Teale (I’m pretty sure that Leonard’s dead ‘n gone) doing a spoken word version of the players’ favourite songs.

How about the Man from Trent Rivers?

There was very quick movement from the MFC, for the ball had been chipped passed around,

that the Kolt from old Waffle had got away.....

(work in progress)

Is this a training thread?

Yes, but training for what?

All this talk around songs playing after a goal is kicked has missed the main benefit I see - when I go to take a leak at the 22min mark, to beat the rush, and someone kicks a goal while I'm gone - the song is almost like a score update before I get back to my seat.

Haha I did find it a slightly odd reply.

I did say that as well as a dad I’m a teacher. So for better or worse I’m surrounded by lots of different kids all the time, have got to know thousands over the journey, and therefore feel I’m reasonably well qualified to talk about them.

And then in my post I spoke about kids generally, without even mentioning my kids.

So not sure how my view is “quite narrow”, but that’s the world we now live in where people are happy to confidently tell people who have spent their lives in a certain field that they don’t actually have any idea what they’re talking about!

Yeah it was late and I was angry, so no wonder it sounds a little odd. And that was me holding back. I probs would’ve broken the censor function in my first sentence alone. 😅

How would you feel if you’re at a concert watching your favourite band and between songs audio excerpts of footy matches were played?

Bring me a sensical example and I'll get back to you. As I said, I'm agnostic on the issue, though I hardly think excerpts of music is beyond the decorum of an AFL match.

Speaking of songs after goals I sat at the GWS game and had a slight chuckle after every one of Jake Stringers 5 goals listening to this 😃

Man! I feel like a woman

Clearly Jake is a big Shania Twain fan

The music after goals and general blaring of music these days at the footy annoys me too but I’m closer to 50 than 30 and rapidly approaching grumpy old man status….im sure supporters like me are not the intended demographic for this kind of thing so can’t do a lot about it

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
