It might suit him but he'll be joining the queue at Casey.....Lindsay, Salem, Jiath, Howes, Taylor, AMW, Onley

He'll need to find some sure handedness to get a game in the back half ahead of the first 4 on that list and there are 3 chasing him already.

He really needs to become a midfielder but he ain't got it atm.......needs a solid year.

He'd be in the same position for any spot on the ground. So far I haven't seen enough to suggest he'll make it as a forward or midfielder but I like what I've seen from him this pre-season in the backline. Competition for spots is healthy though.

I’m not expecting amazing things from Tommy in 2026. He’s coming back from a serious knee injury. But he showed real spark last week in the practice match for Casey. We need to be patient but also allow ourselves to get a little bit excited too at his future.

Very interested in the progress of little Tommy Matthews. Would love to see him have a strong game against the Brissie reserves. Has that forward nous and explosiveness that we need up forward. The benchmark for that right now is Nick Watson and if we can have half of that...

Super keen to see him in action also.

I don’t follow VFl much.

Has he been playing since his injury?

Good explosiveness, manic defensive pressure, but yet to get much of the ball

Showing glimpses

Could fhat be owing to a few things?

I heard VFL lads aren’t travelling well.

Is he in the right positions and maybe not getting it?

I didn't really say it as a criticism, he has had pretty much zero preseason and plays a low possession role so not unexpected early days

…he will be tiny.

Nah, didn’t think you did.

Just wondering with what reasons it could be. His or team fault etc.

I’m hopeful he won’t take too long to get back into it, I only heard great things about things about him and his craft.

Absolutely gift wrapped that for you Trigon 😁....damn it. To be fair, 85cm players would almost be untackleable.

From his first two VFL outings

Match 1 vs Footscray - 8 touches, 3 tackles, 1 goal 2 behinds.

Match 2 vs Box Hill - 9 touches, 5 tackles, 1 goal

Not outstanding numbers, but for a first-year small forward, from what I've seen he gets to the right spots and generally looks very 'zippy'.

One loss, one win. Small sample size. Lost to last year's premiers (Footscray) and beat the perenially strong Box Hill Hawks.

Untraceable?

  • GAMEDAY: Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Demons return to the MCG after a dismal performance in Gather Round to face the reigning dual Premiers Brisbane. What do expect to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
