third round pick for clarry won't do his self esteem and mental health any favours

$7m over 5 years will help

[censored]. You lot think Lamb alone is pushing Clarry out? There is a list management team, which includes the new coach. We want him out, it's effectively a salary dump.

A salary dump is getting rid of a player and his salary for a [censored] pick

We’re getting rid of a player for a [censored] pick and paying him 700k as well

As if he would give a [censored] about what picks are being swapped for him lol.

He is in the states probably having the time.. of his life.

No, he’s in Melbourne. A mutual friend saw him this morning near AIA. They stopped and chatted, Clarrie was on his way to the gym (AAMI Park).

Was he doing a medical?

For who?

Who handles player transfer negotiations in today's landscape?

Within an hour of Steven King's meeting with Clayton Oliver, the media had already picked up on the story. Although the source of the information from Melbourne was unclear, it was widely accepted that the Demons would need to pay out half of Clarry's contract, and even then, they would receive minimal compensation in return.

In line with those reports, Jon Ralph stated this morning: "Demons potentially paying as much as $700,000 to the Giants, which represents about 3.8 per cent of the salary cap".

As expected, the Giants' offer now on the table mirrors the one proposed shortly after King's meeting. Melbourne is told to take it or leave it and the media expects (demands) it to do so.

Another response could be that all negotiations are off the table. The Melbourne Football Club requires Clarry to report for duty when training commences in November, fully prepared to fulfill his contractual obligations and in suitable condition to do so. If not (on either count), the matter could become a legal issue between the player and the club and we possibly go one player short for season 2026.

Just my poor attempt at humour linked to the Humphrey thread running joke where he would have had up to 50 medicals.

All good. I apologise. Contentious issue.

Would be nice to think this could be a possibility but I think we all know we will probs end up taking the deal. We backed ourselves into a corner and now have to pay for it.

Same with track imo he isn’t coming back and we will end up taking pics.

This isn’t a great trade period for us unfortunately and we r paying the price for previous mistakes.

To be clear, I’m not sure as to whether we backed ourselves into a corner or whether we were backed into a corner and if it was the latter, at the behest of who?

I didn’t make my comment lightly because I’ve always been a supporter of Clarrie, he’s been a much loved and highly decorated player at the club and, by it’s implications, the Giants’ offer demeans him and his character more than anything else. In the long run, it might be better to show some strength, for both him and the club to sit back, take our time and find a way to help an individual who has lost his way.

The whole process sounds like a ‘what not to do in negotiations’. Let’s see what eventuates tomorrow

I wish posters would not say 'We did We did that' 'We' incorporates all of us and going by responses on this forum, there are many people like myself who do not put themselves in the WE category. Should read 'The MFC did this etc, etc.'

Circumstances may evolve and a more favorable outcome could be achieved for all parties in 12 months’ time. There is no necessity to accept the GWS offer at this juncture, given its inadequacy and the disrespect it shows to the club and the player they seek to acquire.

These negotiations don’t happen in a vacuum. All sides know the full story even before discussions begin, and the idea circulating on Demonland that we’d be in a different position if we’d played our cards closer to our chest is simply fanciful.

The fact that the Giants were able to arrange a meeting in another state with Clarry, along with various club officials and players, the very next day after the MFC meeting suggests that this had been in the air for some time beforehand and that the Giants already had their ducks in a row.

Absolutely agree with this. GWS are taking the MFC for a ride.

Fantastic result and good luck to Clarry, with chewy on your boot to all who who gave him away, including me, and I'm ashamed.

Jesse Hogan. Traded to Fremantle for picks 6 and 23. Two years later, traded out of Fremantle for pick 54.

JUH. Pick #1 to the Bulldogs in 2020. 5 years later, traded out for ... nothing (?), with the Dogs having to pay his full salary for 2025 even though he didn't play a game or train with the club (effectively).

etc.

There's always a price to be paid for cutting your losses.

If we are only getting a late pick I hope we're not paying the speculated amount even if it comes to be some type of agreement where it's 600k yr 1 then 400k for the next 2 years and then 200k for the final years or if to fill cap space the front end a majority of what we owe early to clear it off the cap faster

You gave no understanding of this financial arrangement.

It will be $600,000 per the next 5 years to pay off at least half of his salary as he is on $1.2m per year. Sorry to advise you of this but it is a fact.

Fickle. Don’t bother coming back when the times are good again.

The very time when we need all the support for the bect season you are weak enough to pull the pin.

Thanks for your support I hope we make the Finals and you miss out.

I don’t accept that automatically we will struggle in 2026. We are not a 14 th side and can turn it around firstly by playing more aggressive footy and winning the close ones.

Secondly our youngsters have to improve and existing older players reach form and confidence. I think Kings coaching could be quite a revelation.

Let’s wait and see. Get your ticket to ride though it will be a great journey to see the outcome without the fickle ones!!!

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
