2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

Featured Replies

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

Didn’t have a good year.

You could always rely on May to have a great tussle with his opponent and on a bad day he’d concede 2 or 3 snags.

However, the premier forwards such as Ben King, Georgiadis and Gunston really took him to town this year. He hit rock bottom against Gunston and but to his credit he kept Elliott mostly in check to end the season.

With Trac and McVee gone, I’d perhaps reconsider moving on from May. You can only lose so many best 23 and that’s not including inevitable injuries to next year’s best line up.

Strongly agree BBP, Steven is definitely best 23 and it would be nice to have him out there when fully fit and held in reserve when we have the inevitable injuries, also with the extended bench he could be handy.

A few years ago, on the back the Weids 2 good finals games we told Tmac to look around because they could not guarantee games in the future. He stayed thank god and has been a good player ever since, including 2 goals in grand final winning team. Who knows what 2026 will bring.

I missed the first quarter of the last match of the year vs 'the filth' getting the kids ready for bed and dialed in at quarter time.

I thought May was outstanding and was in so much shock to log into Demonland post the game and read the criticism he copped, wondering what people were seeing that I had missed. The answer was clear when I went back and watched the first quarter as he did [censored] the bed a little.

Clutching at straws for a positive there but he still has the confidence to bounce back after a poor start so that's maybe something?

I have a theory on why we've told May there may not be opportunities and it revolves around a young Harrison Petty. HP would surely be desperate to go back to where he was once looked upon in the competition as a high quality and sought after key defender. Much more atrractive then a stop gap, highly ridiculed key forward who averages less than a goal a game.

The defensive line to me looks fairly sound without Steven

FB: Lever Petty AMW
HB: Salem/Rivers Turner Bowey

Leaving some depth players in Adams, McDonald, Howes, Woey loitering around waiting for a chance.

In fairness to May he had a really good battle with one of the best forwards of the year in Elliott in the final game. This was a week after his career low point against Gunston.

If he stays I expect another year of contrasting highs and lows from May. Probably gone are the consistent weeks of May winning his assignment.

If May is fully fit next year with no injuries or suspensions, he will play as well as ever for the dees. Guaranteed.

mixed bag this year. at times really good, but ive not seen him get torched by big forwards that often before. He's certainly lost a yard.

It's time to start blooding Adams, and if Jefferson can develop push Petty back into the backline as well.

Is that how you saw it?

I was there right near the goal square.

May lost that again, second time that year.

Slow. Out of position. Clunky.

He will be in the seconds I think most of the year.

I would be fairly sure that Petty is destined for defence especially now that BM has come over from the Filth.

Steven May has been one of the linchpins in our best defence that I have witnessed at the club, if he gets through the preseason in full health he will pick himself, he and TMac provide quality depth.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
