It’s not that he’s not wanted. If we were willing to pick up some of his contract he’d be gone.

Surely he's not on more than $600k. That's easily digested by most clubs and I suspect he'd take 2 x $400k from a new club.

Something needs to be done with our "contracts" process. There's just too many bad deals.

He’s on a good deal.

No club would give him another season either.

I’m glad he’s staying. I still like him. He’s nowhere near the level he was but I appreciate the effort.

not sure any club would offer 2 year deal with Father time knocking on his door

Get him to play lockdown and he'll still be a very good player for us.

May, Turner, Petty, Lever, TMac and Adams leaves us stacked for KPDs though. Can probably play 3 at AFL level and 3 at Casey. I'd still prefer only 2 to play at once though.

I don't consider Turner or Lever to be KPDs. More your third tall, intercepting types. Adams still has the training wheels on.

There's still a place for a reinvigorated May. This episode might be the kick in the butt he needs to get himself right

Maybe if he were to swear off alcohol and get super fit over the pre-season, but we all know he ain’t giving up the beers anytime soon.

There’s what Steven May expects of his team mates, then there’s the standards that he sets for himself. Hypocrite.

Like many posters here, May was still valuable through 2025, playing key tiles on main key forwards but was inconsistent and starting to get caught out more and more. Time is catching up with him and it’s been viewed that we need to see what Adams can offer. Happy though to keep May for 2026 under contract.

And we've already signalled that we want to play Turner and Lever in the same side, so they'll be playing KPD roles.

If you take Geelong's set up, they play three KPDs, including Stewart as the bigger interceptor.

I'd prefer we play Turner, Lever and Petty, but maybe it's a week by week proposition.

Some of you are forgetting that he doesn’t have much control over his form anymore. In 2025 I can recall Tom Lynch, Georgiadis and Gunston giving him the run around and I’m sure there were more. He simply can’t keep up anymore, it happens. He’s about to turn 34, and it’s not going to get any easier for him. There’s a reason no club wanted him, he’s extremely close to cooked.

Perhaps we can find a role for him in a Hibberd style role, or even up forward, but he has one year left and it’s not going to be as the club’s premier defender.

The last two games of the year were completely different to earlier in the year and he lost mobility. Hopefully he can get it back again over summer. The difference between May being a very good player and past it are not far apart.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
