Maybe he could teach a few others to do the same, switching the ball would be so much easier.

Am I missing something with May? Every week multiple people come on here and give him a bake. He’s not the AFL’s premier defender anymore but he’s still easily one of the first picked.

May - marked too harshly

Maybe . But he doesn't seem to be the player that would destroy opponents when he would take ten marks a game and mostly contested. And over the last three years or so has fumbled below his knees more.

But time and tide and even after several off games by May warrants selection in most teams. So while some criticism is justified, generally, I concur that he gets too much flack. Like Salem does as well. These two defenders along with Lever firing were the reason we won a flag and made finals so consistently.

But you just can't keep performing at those high standard at their ages. Injuries come and sideline you making it harder to maintain those levels.

Having said that Salem looked like he was in his form of five years ago.

And Tmac if Lucky probably only has two more years.

But it's no real concern for alarm given we have Disco, Bowser and Petts around. And Mcvee. As for young man Rivers, I like having him in the middle.

Guess you missed the turnover ones then.

Must’ve misunderstood me mate - free as in; he turned the ball over the majority of the time yesterday. He once was an elite kick, but those days are just about done.

Have loved Salo & credit to him for getting as much of the pill as he did, but his disposal was not to standard yesterday & has been for quite sometime unfortunately.

And he can't kick over 40 metres even Viney can kick 45....but I totally agree with you on him.

He went at 71% yesterday 3 turnovers, twelve score assists and over 400m gained, he was our highest rated player, I had him in my top four.

Oh good. I thought I would have to re-watch the game and focus on him. I thought it was a very good game from Salem. Glad I'm not the only one.

Lever - is he injured?

Its interesting you should note that.

It's clearly something they have been working on, ie low, flat passes inside 50 -often from near the boundary and kicked into the corridor on the 45.

Langdon does several each game, ditto melk.

And its more than just kicking back into the corridor - the kicks are being kept deliberately low, are often scrappy (particularly langdons) and often bounce before getting to the target.

I'm guessing the idea is four fold:

  • Get it to the hotspot quickly, ie not floaters to reduce the time for the oppo to get numbers to the target and by doing

  • Ideally hit a target dead in front of the goal, 20-25 metres out.

  • But if not marked, either because it's spoiled or because it bounces, it becomes a predictable ground ball which we fight to win or tackle the oppo if they win it.

  • Reducing intercept marks

In regard to the last point, all teams look to reduce oppo intercept marks inside D50, but we look hyper focused on doing so.

Watching petty on Sunday from ground level in the pocket you could see his sole focus was blunting mcartin. Barely left his side or looked to get separation.

AJ was similarly defensive. Even Friiter was pretty defensive- am I right in thinking he waxed with melksham to defend Blakley?

Ironically, of our medium and tall forwards, Melksham who has been playing the defensive forward role, was probably our most offensive forward (McCartin too big fir melk I reckon).

Not a fan of his these days. He is good when everything is one way, but when the going gets tough, he has a habit of panicking and makes terrible decisions by hand and foot, but in every discussion, you have your view; I have mine, and that's ok.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

  • POSTGAME: Sydney

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.

  • CASEY: Northern Bullants

The Casey Demons travelled to a windy Cramer Street, Preston yesterday and blew the Northern Bullants off the ground for three quarters before shutting up shop in the final term, coasting to a much-needed 71-point victory after leading by almost 15 goals at one stage. It was a pleasing performance that revived the Demons’ prospects for the 2025 season but, at the same time, very little can be taken from the game because of the weak opposition. These days, the Bullants are little more than road kill. The once proud club, situated behind the Preston Market in a now culturally diverse area, is currently facing significant financial and on-field challenges, having failed to secure a win to date in 2025.
