Goodwin spent years playing players purely for the fact he loved them. Was afraid to hurt their feelings or they’d ’want out’

Yep. Exactly. Many here were [censored] off Goody took way too long to drop his favourites on poor for or promote good form from Casey. It was infuriating.

Kingy comes in from a more competitive culture where selection integrity is actually a thing and goes wooshka and I'm here for it!

Goody never heard the expression "if you aren't improving you're dying". He was happy to rest on his laurels and let his players rule the roost whilst he kicked back in cruise mode happy with his one premiership and no focus or goals thereafter.

I'm so glad we have a serious person from a proper team coming in and whipping this club into shape.

Reported in The Age that Clarry flew off to Sydney after the meeting.

I worry Melbourne are doing that thing where you advertise a garage sale on a Saturday morning and people start ringing on Thursday with sob stories about why they cant make Saturday, so you let them come early and they then low ball everything and you take it because you worry it wont sell, then on Saturday realise you could have got way more...

Just been through this

Advertised on Facebook a week and few days before

9am sharp. Not 7am, not 8am, not 8.45am - 9am. Security sliding gate shut until 9. Worked a treat and caused much mirthful barbs from Attendees

A heated discussion huh?

Does this look like a post that comes from an angry player who’s just been told to look for a new club?…

Claz must’ve posted this lighthearted, humorous post after he “stormed out of the meeting.”

Holy father in heaven, give me strength. 🙄

I know, I am also thinking this. Sounds like the media are having an absolute feeding frenzy on Melbourne which they love to do, but Oliver is a cheeky bugger and he really doesn't seem all that "heated"...to me that sounds like complete fiction. As if Kingy and co. sit down with Oliver and push him out, that just sounds ridiculous and insensitive and dumb. They would have been honest and said "hey mate we just have a bit of a different approach for you in mind...what do you think, and if you hate it then we respect your choice to explore alternatives" or something like that, but be careful what you believe, the Media are in their element this is their arena and they love this kind of thing. It gest them clicks and pays their bills.

Kingy doesn't seem silly and if we can see that Oliver and Trac are probably on their way back up to better form then I'm sure he can see it too. Not to mention what it would do to the list if both were gone, unless they replaced them both with like for likes which I doubt would happen.

Try not to give the media rats too much oxygen with this stuff, that's all they want, just wait to hear actual news from our club. They sound like they're trying to be more open and honest anyway so let's hope that continues. I truly hope Oliver stays because I think he's great. Trac not too sure, great but his attitude stinks he seems much more selfish and I don't care for that and I doubt the team does either.

Don't play their game, don't buy in to their BS.

Did we not honestly think the AFL trade radio would not froth at the mouth with this stuff. Its a distraction every single year and im sick and tired of it. The truth is somewhere in between what the club and media is saying, but just listening to the gutter journalism on afl trade radio is going. Reportedly Sammy Edmund is beating his chest this morning for getting the scoup. It really is a new low but we have to accept the environment in which we operate in like it or hate it. We are making this a really easy situation.

It wont be long before Guerra, Smith and King appointments are not going to be questioned. Trac camp must be loving this as he is now 'justified' in requesting out and his loyalty and commitment will not be questioned.

Makes my blood boil.

And that’s the problem… we need more midfielders that know how to get the ball and also know how to receive a ball and do something with it. Need midfielders who are capable of playing forward also. Viney, Trac and Oliver know how to get the ball…. But they do nothing with it. 2021 different story but that’s in the past now.

The last bit is the most telling. You don't talk about players exploring their options if that's not a big possibility.

also re the post, not once did it say we have asked him to leave

Steven King about to find out just how much the media have it in for Melbourne.

So let me get this straight...Oliver in Melbourne, has a meeting with new coach and co, then he gets heated and within an hour has leaked the story to the media and stormed off to get on a plane to Sydney to "explore his options"...spare me! If he's gone to Sydney its because he had a trip to Sydney booked ffs no one reacts and does those things that quickly what an absolute circus.

I would love it if the media goes nuts, their circus gets bigger and bigger, then the Melborne media crew just come out with a statement saying "all is well, Oliver committed and staying, nothing to see here, you've all been punked".

Correct me if I am wrong, did Guerra not say in a radio interview that Petracca and Oliver were both listed as best 22 players in Steven King's coaching presentation?

The last week would suggest otherwise. So who is talking rubbish? King in his coaching presentation, or Guerra in his radio interview?

Guerra actually said best 25.

King seems genuinely disappointed in Tracc not giving him the benefit of the doubt to stick around. Same as Judd.

Oliver might well have been 25th of 25. After meeting with the assistant coaches and fitness staff King might've had his opinion on Oliver lowered. That's not unreasonable.

So if Clarry has flown to Sydney, I assume it's to meet with Sydney Football Club, although I guess it could be GWS too. I'd say his link with Goody will see him in red and white then.

GWS a far better fit. They lack clearance on ballers, they have nothing after Tom Green.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
