I just saw that clarry only had 2 turnovers, so his involvements in the game must simply not have been that impactful, for example he only had 2 clearances.

I'm not sure if ground ball gets or post clearance possessions are worth much. But I thought he did a good job feeding loose balls to the other mids all game.

Round 24, 2025 MCG - Magpies vs Demons

And so ends the season that wasn't.

Langford goes BANG!! What a game from the young rookie and against a highly rated opponent. Let's take a peak at his night to remember...

24 effectives at an incredible 92.5% efficiency, 2 contested marks, 1 one percenter, 2 clearances, 3 rebounds, 3 inside 50s, 1 tackle, 7 score involvements, 5 intercepts, 665 meters gained (the most of any player on the night with the next best, Joss Daicos @ 572), 1 goal and only 3 turnovers 👋

Thanks DD Harvey Langford and Christian Salem were at the elite level last night, Harvey’s a real jet.

Here's a rough guide for where Clarry scored his rating points compared to his season average (and last week). This is based on my estimate of rating points which do not account for pressure. The absence of pressure information:

  • underestimates the points from ball use if the player disposes of the ball under pressure; and

  • ignores the points accumulated from the player applying pressure on the opposition ball carrier.

Notwithstanding, it provides a rough guide for the breakdown of points. Clarry usually accumulates most of his points through contested possessions (which are generally worth quite a bit) - he only had five on Friday (=3rd worst of his career) and only two ground ball gets (equal worst of his career). 26 of his 31 possessions were uncontested and were worth 0 points.

"Ball Use" includes shots at goal and I have calculated his missed shot at approximately -1.5 points.

Interesting wheelo - ta.

On pressure, Clarry had one of his lowest ratings fir the season I suspect, accruing only 27 points against a season average of 49.7.

Team & Player Ratings H&A Season 2025 vs H&A Season 2024

That's a wrap folks.

Big Max the clear No.1 for the season and deservedly so.

Clarry makes up some lost ground on his 2024 shocker to claim 2nd place. Still a long way off his best from 2023 and prior. Eg; 2023 5.00 2022 5.32 2021 5.25

Salem winds back the clock to pip Tracc, just, for third place.

Culley finishing in the top 10 is worth noting, albeit off a smallish sample size of nearly four matches.

Kozzy, Bowey, Chandler and Turner with the most notable ranking improvements on their 2024 seasons. Probably not a great season to compare against though so need to temper the enthusiasm a little here.

A positive to take into 2026. The Team Rating is just over 5% up on the horrid 2024 season. But that assumes the top 22 players are playing in the side each week which of course is not always going to be the case. 2025's Team Rating was also 2% up on the flag Team Rating of 2021. Again, you don't always play the best 22 rated players every week for various reasons so it's a far from perfect science.

It's going to be an interesting off season and year ahead. Hopefully some good news on the training ground front also!?

What went wrong for AFL bottom 9... and who they must target to bounce back in 2026

The Demons improved their forward 50 connection after a dire first two months of the season. From Rounds 0-9, they ranked a lowly 16th for score-per-inside-50 rate. But after Round 10, the Dees promisingly climbed to fourth in the same metric, suggesting the mid-season changes made by Simon Goodwin were starting to pay dividends. Part of that rectified connection was their chain-to-score rate, which went from 14th to third in the competition in the same aforementioned periods. And from Round 10 onwards, Melbourne was one of the best punishment sides in the league, ranking fifth for intercept-to-score rate; exhibiting their ability to transition threateningly after forcing opposition turnovers. There are reasons to be optimistic about the trajectory of their game style, but it’s now a matter of which direction the new senior coach decides to take it.”

“While Melbourne made strides offensively and in terms of its counterpunch ability in transition, it uncharacteristically had one of its poorest defensive campaigns in some time. The Dees’ 88.6 average points conceded was their worst output since 2019, while their score-per-inside-50 against rate was 48 per cent; their worst since 2016. And to cap it off, the club’s pressure rating of just 175 this year was their worst output in a season on record. It came in a sign-of-the-times campaign where long-time pillars Steven May and Jake Lever — who are edging closer to the end — combined for just 23 games played.”

That's a super interesting article @WheeloRatings , thank you. A couple of unexpected insights from me:

  1. Petracca top 5 for score involvements this year improves my view of his performance this year

  2. Gawn's score launch record of 2nd best ever recorded is amazing, highlighting how good of a season he had. And the fact that he did not only through hitouts to advantage, winning possession pre-clearance as well as from intercept shows how important he is to the team!

Hi Andrew, thanks for all your work all season.

The departures of Petracca and Oliver have pretty much universally in the press been seen to be having a significant negative impact on how the team goes going forward. Personally I'm not so sure. If we'd had just 6 better kicks i50 that resulted in goals we would have been 6 wins better and 6 better kicks in another three games and we would have been 9 wins better which would have put us in equal 6th.

To get an idea of how much we are going to miss them I thought it would be great to know who were the top 5 or top 10 players who delivered the ball i50 for us this year and how many of their i50's were retained. I remember seeing a stat at one stage that Trac had delivered the ball 40 times and only 3 of those entries were retained. It would also be interesting to see the same stats for say the top 10 in this stat in the league. And anything else around these stats that you think are relevant. Many thanks in anticipation.

Cheers, and my pleasure!

The Petracca stat was the number of his kicks inside 50 that were marked. By my calculations for the whole season, of his 98 kicks inside 50 this season excluding shots at goal, nine were marked (ranked 374th) and 37 were retained (ranked 331st). Petracca had 30 more non-shot kicks inside 50 this season than any other Melbourne player.

The first table below shows the retention rate for all Melbourne players taking 15+ kicks inside 50, ordered by most kicks.

The second table shows the average estimated equity gained/lost from kicks inside 50 which shows Langford clearly on top. This is a bit more nuanced than simply retained / not retained as it takes into account:

  • how the kicker won possession (i.e. proxy for pressure);

  • the location where the kick was taken;

  • the location where the kick ended up; and

  • who took next possession and how.

The third and fourth tables are the AFL leaders with 50+ kicks for these two stats - Langford ranks third in the AFL for equity.

Kicks inside 50 resulting in a possession being retained by the team, excluding shots at goal, 2025, 15+ kicks
Note: includes all kicks where possession was taken outside 50, the kick was taken from outside 50, and the next possession was inside 50.

Interesting to see that the Cats have 4 of the top 9 players for this stat.

Let's hope Kingy can replicate that with us.

Agree NC the ability to sway the game our way, that last kick is so crucial, we need more Bisons on the park.

  • how the kicker won possession (i.e. proxy for pressure);

  • the location where the kick was taken;

  • the location where the kick ended up; and

  • who took next possession and how.

The third and fourth tables are the AFL leaders with 50+ kicks for these two stats - Langford ranks third in the AFL for equity.

This is amazing. Thank you so much. Reinforces my view that the departure of Petracca and Oliver are highly overrated by 4th Estate experts outside the club.

Some surprising results there within our team and sobering results compared to the wider comp. Surprised to see that Rivers kicks i50 have been so poor and Melk's are such a standout.

Will be very interested to hear from track watchers if they pick up on any work which is obviously been done to improve this.
