Crowd Violence

I’ve only seen “crowd” violence at the football twice in years.

There’s that very endearing group of Geelong supporters that likes to stand behind the wire fence behind where our cheer squad sit and chant all game. They upset everyone trying to watch the game and then the insults start to fly. It’s hard to imagine they are not trying to inflame the opposition supporters. Last year I saw it lead to a scuffle when one of the Geelong group rushed a Melbourne supporter who clearly was trying to avoid a physical outcome.

Then today, while leaving the ground, there was a nasty incident between what I think were Collingwood supporters.

It’s very hard to experience these sort of things and have not them colour our view of the supporters of the particular clubs. When they say we go to the snow, it’s really kind of tame compared to how we see some of them.

the last game i saw a crowd fight was back at a dogs bombers game back in 1999

I personally have never really been threatened or anything, at worst i've just been told to shut up or sworn at (Geelong and Sydney were the worst).

However there was an incident with some close family friends (who are Bombers fans, but i won't hold it against them) two years ago. They were in a Gen admit area for a game vs Richmond and there was a drunk, loud, foul-mouthed and smoking tigers fan in front of them. One of them has asthma and so the father quietly and nicely asked him to put the cigarrete out or go outside, the tigers fan went of at him and punch him in the mouth. He got a bruised face and almost broke his nose, so i've now decided that the tigers fans are the most feral bunch of misfits in my book.

The only incident which almost became physical for me was when i was in Sydney in 2003 and there were a bunch of feral swans fans in our area, they were basically taking every opportunity to put us down and abuse us. At one stage they were saying some really pathetic and cowardly things to my mother, and my brother, dad and i were coming close to retaliating. In the end, we sat quietly and ignored them but it soured any opinions i had about them in later years.

Ironic that i used to live there and they WERE my second team, not anymore.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of sitting at AAMI Stadium in the midst of the Port Adelaide cheer squad.

I was cheering in a pretty calm manor (no swearing or anything), and had a few guys turn around and threaten to shut me up if I didn't do it myself.

After that, we ended up swapping seats. I was pretty lucky to have been there with a Port supporter who was pretty big, because I'm sure these guys wouldn't have thought twice about hitting a 17 year old girl.

They are a very scary bunch, the ferals from Port. VERY scary.
