How long is Goodwin's contract?

It's but a contract...which we know is worthless ( comparatively) in Footy.

Do you enjoy misery Macca ... that's what's on offer. And you would by choice.

Not when there's hope involved

I'm predicting a year of indifferent performances and finals next yesr

What exactly is our new game plan though? The last two weeks I've seen absolutely no system or cohesion at all. Nobody seems to know what they're doing.

@beelzebub

A replacement coach would still have the same issues implementing a new game plan

A new voice right now might actually make matters worse and confuse the players

The players aren't adapting, that's the issue

You didn't need the "too".

No-one said anyone can do no wrong. I just think people should appreciate the fact that these players and coaches are human beings. Be frustrated at where the team is at, I certainly am, but some of the language on here is just pitiful.

Compounded by the fact that the players we've deliberately brought in to help drive and implement a more transition-based game plan have been largely unavailable.

Doubly compounded by the fact that we can't even keep any team on the field, yet alone one put together for a new approach. The constant changes both across games, but also IN games (losing Jefferson and then Lindsay early in the last 2 games) is the opposite of settled and consistent.

Ha ha!

The folk here need to be patient

We're trying to enact a game plan that is a long way from where we were at, previously

And it's no surprise that the older players are slow to change

As previously stated, if we can somehow get Oliver, Viney & Petracca to change their ways, we're a chance (big ask)

But we might be better off with a (somewhat) rebuilt list and that's going to take some time?

How long? I reckon half way through next year could see a turning point

Agreed

Folk here need to think back to just last year where we tried Plan B but had to resort back to Plan A when the players just couldn't adapt.

So it is no easy task

So just last year we were still bombing the ball to either pocket as our default game plan

So now, we're having another go at Plan B because we have to

But again, changing a game plan in such a vastly different way will see indifferent results

Everyone's all over the Hollywood Hawks, but it has taken them what, 6 years to transition from the old guard to the new?

The Hawks are a very confident group and that can advance a new game plan

And how they ruthlessly did it, is what we should be looking at.... cash in while we can.

What is the game plan in your opinion Macca?

All I see that's changed is chipping in the backline more than ever, leading to indecisiveness, before the inevitable turnover.

I honestly don't know what we are trying to achieve?

The new game plan is a work in progress

Previously, our game often eventuated with a long bomb to the pocket

So I'd say we are now trying to move the ball in similar ways as the better teams

Quick ball movement, corridor use, leg speed to complement, crisp delivery by hand or by footy, 45° diagonal kicks cross-crossing the ball forward. Lowering the eyes and so much more

But here's the thing, I'm not part of the inner sanctum so there's probably a lot in there that isn't transparent

The fact that the above isn't happening yet doesn't mean that the endeavour and goal isn't there to make it work

What complicates things is the turmoil in the off season and the constant references to Petracca, Oliver & Kozzie perhaps wanting out

What would all the other players make of all that?

I'd say it slows down the buy-in to the new game plan

So if people here reckon there are problems at the club, the above is probably the reason

My view only ... if a player acts like a Prima-Donna they immediately become commodities only and we'd be better off with those types on the trade table

No sentiment, it's all about the team

Can you give an example of when we've actually tried to do any of those things? All I see at the moment is an even worse version of our 2024 system.

I think the plan will come together I’m just not convinced it’ll do so in time to save Goodwin. I also think we’ve had too many injuries to start the year as well as we hoped. McVee and Windsor are critical to a new way as I think Lindsay was. May and Lever obviously critical. We need all those 5 on the park. I prefer Rivers off half back and doubt Salem has much use left in him beside a good quarter here and there.

Do people here remember what happened when we replaced Neeld with Craig

We still lost and we still got smashed with that boundary hugging football nonsense. Craig went with Neeld's plan

So if we replace Goodwin what game plan would an interim coach employ? The old plan where we go back to bombing it long to the pockets?

Or continue on with Plan B which the sacked coach was trying to implement?

Plan C? How is that going to work mid season?

We may as well see it out until at least the end of the season. And in my view, that is how the Board will see it

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
