Frawley to debut

Featured Replies

According to the AFL site, Whelan is out with 'foot' - so this is a new injury because he was out with a hamstring, right?

I hate seeing him in the outs, Rivers and this OP rumour and Bartram - it really depletes our backline. This injury curse just doesn't stop.

But worst of all is Sylvia, I wish this guy could get a break - he could be a seriously good player if he did.

I didn't expect Newton to get a game this week but I would have been encouraged by emergency. What is going on with this boy? I know Finks is aware of some plan the club has with him, but surely it wouldn't hurt to put him in the emergencies which by all reports, he deserves.

As good as it is to see Frawley in there, this has to be one of the most disappointing selections this year. Every time we take a step forward with injuries, we take two back. I'm beyond frustrated. I don't care where we finish this year but I want to see a win, and soon. This losing and the injuries are getting to me.

to what end does putting him in the emergencies achieve? if we don't want to play him yet, we shouldn't, if we do we should, no point putting him in the emergencies if the club doesn't think hes up to it.

i maintain we'll have 22 blokes out there on sunday that are good enough to win, provided their attitude is right. i have no doubt about it, and while i'm pretty cut up about wheels again being injured (where's his career headed?) i really think we have the players left that can do the job for not just the supporters, but each other

Don't get too excited, he probably won't make the final cut.

But at the very least it means The Bizz hasn't slipped completely out of the selectors minds

Who would Holland play on, with Thompson out of the side?

While this seems like a fairly logical question.....

KANGAROOS

B: Daniel Pratt, Michael Firrito, Scott McMahon

HB: Jesse Smith, Shannon Watt, Jess Sinclair

C: Adam Simpson, Andrew Swallow, Brady Rawlings

HF: Daniel Harris, Aaron Edwards, Corey Jones

F: Lindsay Thomas, Leigh Brown, Drew Petrie

FOLL: Hamish McIntosh, Shannon Grant, Brent Harvey

I/C (from): Glenn Archer, Kasey Green, Blake Grima, Ed Lower, David Hale, Josh Gibson, Matt Campbell

Any suggestions?

Guess on final team

IN: CJ

OUT: Bizzel, Brown, Mclean

Great news to hear that Frawls is in, hope he plays a blinder. Didn't expect him to play with his fitness, but it shows how highly rated he is. I still reckon Mclean won't come up and will be back next week. Miller looks like he will have one more chance to impress, but hopefully Newton has another great game at Sandy, so he can make a direct swap with him. Hope ND sticks with the youth and brings CJ in for Brown. Brown is getting to old and i think he'll be delisted at the end of the season

Yeah i am also stumped about Holland in the team, he would have been handy last week on big Q, who absolutely dominated

I'd be very disappointed if Bizzell gets a game ahead of CJ, given that CJ was named BOG for Sandy last week, and from all reports, Bizzell just went.

As for who Holland plays on... I didn't realise Hale is back, which means he will play on Leigh Brown, or Hale if he is rested up forward.

Carroll onto Drew Petrie, Bell on Jones, Frawley/Petterd on Edwards/Thomas, and the one that really worries me is Ward on Harris perhaps?

Dammit Wheels, why are you always injured! :(

Bizzell has played one game this year after not playing for over a year because of a leg fracture. In that game he played pretty well, not great but was by no means the worst. I can't remember him being beaten by his direct opponent for a start. He did make a couple of errors, but who hasn't this year.

Since playing for Sandy he has been in the best a few (not sure exactly how many) times and seeing as Rivers and Ferguson are not playing he should be in the team IMO.

I'm all for giving the kids a go, but I think that Bizzell should get the nod ahead of Frawley this week.

The biz as good as he was, IMO, has lost it.

great to see frawley debuting and hope miller doesn't play.... although has played better than most in our side this season (wish he could learn to kick)

i dont think brock will miss out im hoping for a win this week will be very dissapoitned as will many if we don't win we have a real big chance this tym... we wont get to many more this season lol

The 3 that will play are Robbo, Mclean and FRAWLEY if Daniher and Fagan have half a brain

CJ should not go within 15 kilometres of the MCG.

harsh but true

Putting him in the emergencies shows he is close to selection which he should be. He has played 3 good games in a row - Frawley hasn't even played 3 games and is in the team. I don't understand why they won't let him get a taste when he is playing well in the VFL yet Miller gets none of it a few weeks in a row and stays in the team.

see i disagree, namely because we don't know what's going on behind closed doors.

we don't know what's going on with newton's relation with the club, but they're not that stupid that they've completely forgotten him. if they have an arrangement, or a set plan, which seems likely, then naming him on the emergencies wouldn't achieve anything. furthermore, if he is not named in the emergencies, he is able to fully focus on his task at sandringham which he seems to be enjoying at the moment. obviously he would be close to selection, and does not need to be named in the emergencies as a hand-out. it'd be a pretty shocking way t gain your first selection as well, newton in for his first game as emergency, forced to sit in the stand while the zebras go around.

I really want to see Frawley get a game but what has he done to deserve a spot on the extended bench?

Alot of people have been arguing that Newton should earn his spot before given a go, that he should prove himself with consistent performances with Sandy, why doesn't this rule apply to Frawley?

Frawley was in line for a senior gig before the season started, and afaik played in the pre-season games. He was then injured but has recovered. He's essentially fighting for a tall back spot and we have Warnock, Ferguson, and Rivers all out. The only other player I see Frawley competing against in terms of selection is Bizz, and he's been named ahead of Bizzell - why not?

I'd play Newton before Miller, but not before Neitz or Robertson (or Dunn/Bate etc).

Well clearly (and thankfully) the club disagrees, as Frawley is certain to play, while Bizzell looks likely to miss out.

Now please explain this one to me. We are 0-8 and Bizzell only has 14 rounds left in his career, and yet you want him to play ahead of an 18 year old who the club see as a 200 gamer?

What on earth is playing Bizzell going to achieve, when he is one of the most one-dimensional players in our side, with limited pace and no accountability. What are we going to get from him on Sunday, that we haven't already seen before?

Given where we are with our season, playing 30 year olds who can't hack it anymore ahead of kids who are ready and willing to start their career, is absolutely criminal.

He may help Melbourne win their first game of the season. That's achieving something.

Bizzell was very good in '03 playing as an under-sized CHB.

In '04 he started well, broke his cheek bone (face) and was not the same afterwards.

In '05 he was pretty good, faded a bit during the end of the season and was unlucky to be dropped in IMO.

In '06 he broke his leg.

In '07 he played one game (after not playing for over a year!) got 16 possessions and looked pretty good.

Yes he may be a bit slow, a bit old. But he reads the play extremely well, is generally a good disposer of the ball, has experience, is tough as nails and is a good decision maker.

I'm sure that Frawley will be a very good player, but if Melbourne want to win this week then IMO they should play Bizzell.

But look, that's just my opinion.

EDIT: I just noticed that Frawley is named in the starting 18.

Great pre-season form, would of been selected Round 1 had he not been injured.

He's in line because he played well in a couple of practice matches? CJ did that as well and look at the general view of him here.

If it was the same rules for everyone then he would have to play consistent good footy for Sandy, but it isn't and Garland is a perfect example.

Can someone actually tell me what is wrong with McLean? It was a foot injury wasn't it? Why is he taking so long to get a game? or does he still have those niggling soft-tissue injuries? I'm getting tired of waiting for injured players to come back like a few other posters have said.

Whelan and Sylvia out again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm assuming Sylvia's OP has flared up again and Wheels has yet another injury. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh

Sylvia has "hamstring soreness"

im with jaded. there is no reason to play bizzel. its time to play the kids.

cj should also get a game ahead of brown or ward. yes he has had some bad games this season but to write him off like some people have here is disgraceful. in my opinion he is not a back man, he is more of a wingman. and should be given the chance to come off the bench and play that way.

Rivers, Ferguson, and Warnock are injured. Who are you suggesting should be selected in place of Frawley?

From what I can see you're simply arguing the point with Frawley because you don't agree with the point of view other have expressed regarding Newton.

Well said Jarka. Totally agree. As it is we will go into the game on Sunday with 3 underdone players, (McLean, Robbo, Frawley). Unfortunately I dont think we can win with that many players needing match time. Maybe in two weeks yes, but not yet. Frawley needs a couple more games at Sandy, Then give him a go.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
