17 - 0 hit outs to advantage.  Good luck trying to defend and win a match with that.

That was always going to happen.  Even last time when Darcy and Jackson were up against Max they won 15 hit-outs to advantage against Max.  Our only chance was to crowd stoppages.

I was watching and counting numbers at stoppages at the start hoping we would crowd them and could not believe what I saw.  Below are the first 2 non CB stoppages.  What you can't see at the first is that Jordan Clark was 5m off to the left by himself and Darcy tapped it in that direction for an easy clearance.  No idea what Chandler and Throlstrup were doing.  The second boundary throw in shows it better as its wide angle. Freo brought their high half forward (Frederick) and we had to have Sparrow pick him up, meaning Freo just had numbers on the outside that could do what they liked.

Then we reset at half time.  In the third we started crowding stoppages (see third stoppage). We have everyone there.  That worked better but the game was done by then.

Regardless of set ups you need to neutralise a few and win a few hit outs to advantage Watson.  You could orchestrate a plus 2 all day at stoppages and still get pantsed giving them that much of an advantage.   We got absolutely trounced at the source due to having no one in the ruck that could compete a little.

It also doesn't help that players like Kozzy and Salem are seemingly giving up the outside and leaving their opponents to burst away too easily with the service they were being given.  Double wammy.

We play like an amature team every other match it seems.  There's a discipline / coaching / tactical issue in our side at the moment that's hanging around like a very bad fart that lingers and the windows still haven't been opened.

Pretty much ever since Freo stopped our 10 game winning streak in 2022.  Other sides are working us over tactically and in many other aspects far too easily.   On top of that we failed to ensure we maintained our structure up forward yesterday purely via selection which is a cardinal sin and also allowed the boys to be sucked up the field too high for pretty much the entire match.  If you can't win the ball at the source and getting pantsed, at least get big numbers behind the footy.  Defend there, seek the turnover and look to run it out by hand and foot.  Oh wait, we are one of the worst HB teams in the AFL and don't have many line breaking runners bar Windsor and occasionally Moniz (still building AFL tank) ... forget that idea!

I seriously fail to see where we are improving as a team this season and what assets / weapons we are a bringing to the table.  We play up one week then a hot mess the next.  Yes there are many youngens and they'll have off days but yesterday wasn't a result of just that.

Round 19, 2024 Optus Stadium - Dockers vs Demons

Not much to get excited about in this one.

May and McVee held up well in defence under the most extreme pressure, probably not seen since the last time we played this lot.

Following on from last week's uptick, Petty posted his best rating for the season coming in in 2nd place behind May.  His prior best against the Lions in Rnd 16 with a 3.12

Our team rating was a long way off the 2023 team rating, with Freo posting a team rating that matched our average last season.  Effectively a 21% gap between the two team's ratings.

That shows it all DD they had 10 of the top 14 players and by some margin, interesting that they scored at our 2023 team rate and we have fallen 20%. That’s one hell of a drop.

Not sure how much more Simon can get out of the regular group he sticks with anymore DZ.

I reckon alot are pretty much done mentally and physically.

Our engine room's done and dusted for 2024.

My take is, we aren't going to worry anyone even if we made finals.  So it's best to take anyone who needs some end of season surgery or fix ups out and do it now.

Put em under the knife if needed eg;  potentially Vines.

Replace with anyone from Casey be it Laurie, Sesto or brown Dog or just alternate over the weeks and may the best man win.  Not that i'm placing much faith in any of those bar Brown.

Manage the older fellas like May and T-Mac (IF he's continuing on into 25) by utilising the likes of Tommo and Marty as replacements.

Roll any other youngsters through that you want to trial further like Jeffo for Turner to see where he's at.

It's time to manage those we need to look after to prep them into next season, trial the youngsters and review all the off season crew including everyone in the FD.

A few changes might be needed there also.  We look as stale as a year old croissant and highly unskilled with our ball use in general against the better rated sides.

It's pretty obvious the present list is not going to take us to the promised land again so we may as well reset and prep for 2025 and beyond now.

Our recruiting needs to raise the bar on who we go after in terms of skill set as we have way too many hackers by hand & foot.  And / or it might also have something to do with training methods?  The gulf between us and the Dockers, especially by hand and their spread was immense yesterday and if anything it's gotten worse each time we play them.

Imagine getting into the top four and meeting a team like this, or even GWS on a good day in finals.  We are a long way off highly skilled teams with leg speed when they're putting up something near their best 22 atm.

The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Round 20, 2024 MCG - Demons vs Giants

It's been a long time since i can recall an MFC team taking the park where a player has not posted a rating above 4!  Without scouring through the records my guess is possibly 2019.

The entire team bar a few players (see below) has fallen right away from 2023 levels with no section (top 6, bottom 6 or the team as a whole) holding up.

Across the board a massive 25% drop away from our average 2023 rating in this match.  The bottom 6 player rating is a mega 54% away from 2023 levels.

Six of the first top ten rated players are Giants with only two of our boys. Lever & McVee cracking the top ten.

Laurie posting his highest rating (i think) in the red & blue was one positive outcome.  Chandler also hitting a high we haven't seen for some time.

At this rate i would hazard a guess that we'll be lucky to win any further games for the year, let alone make finals.  We may have a slim chance vs the Suns, depending on their form and/or injuries, but that would be about it imho.

Happy to stand by assessment earlier (above) that it is time to send any players who need it into surgery, play anyone who needs looking at from Casey like Jeffo and maybe Sestan to allow them to see what's required at the next level and also a chance for us to see where they're at.

No idea DZ.  The effort appeared to be there from some and we were also pretty efficient with ball in hand and inside 50 when we did get in in there?  Do you have any theories?

We were also well behind the Bombers in many team ratings but managed to put them away.

Forgot to post the team metrics above which indicates we did ok in the efficiency stakes...

Thanks DD the only thing that comes to mind is our efficiency with ball in hand, maybe our better players do more with each disposal, we certainly didn’t rack up so many disposals chipping the ball around as they did it seemed our only desire was to get the ball forward and sometimes to our detriment.

I thought we slow played them a fair bit and with great effect in the first quarter and that kept the game on our terms DZ.

It also meant less ball / possession for them which meant less use by hand then spread etc which they are well ahead of us at atm unfortunately.

As the game progressed we moved away from the posession game a little more and started to attempt our own sling shotting.  At stages i felt we over did this or went too quickly when the best option was probably to balance that out with more slow play at times after starting to hand the ball back a litttle to much.

When we eventually ended up behind and needed to go fast, we started to do more slow play a few times too many.  The slow play in red time was especially inexplicable given we needed to hit the scoreboard quickly.

At this point i do not see a team that has a fairly straight forward plan that they're capable of executing for more than about 2 quarters or so DZ.  And certainly not capable of sustaining under lengthy periods of pressure from a quality opponent which you are going to get in most games at this level.

I suspect a combination of some missing pieces of the puzzle from a list management POV in recent times, potentially some mixed or poor messaging on the track, injuries catching up and also the ageing and maturing of some of our past greats.

Add to that the loss of Guss and the issues with Clarry and it all adds up to a season to forget.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.
  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

@WheeloRatings when was the last time we had such a low percentage in our forward half?

I don't know - it is clearly our lowest since the start of 2021 based on my estimates and I don't have data pre-2021!

Here are Melbourne's lowest 20 matches for time in forward half since the start of 2021.

Season Round Team Opposition Forward Half
2024 21 Melbourne Western Bulldogs 36.7%
2022 17 Melbourne Geelong 40.0%
2023 10 Melbourne Port Adelaide 40.1%
2024 10 Melbourne West Coast 42.4%
2024 3 Melbourne Port Adelaide 42.8%
2023 17 Melbourne St Kilda 44.3%
2024 12 Melbourne Fremantle 44.7%
2024 0 Melbourne Sydney 45.5%
2024 19 Melbourne Fremantle 45.5%
2024 1 Melbourne Western Bulldogs 46.1%

2021 8 Melbourne Sydney 47.5%
2024 15 Melbourne North Melbourne 47.7%

Thanks, reckon when we play well we stick our tackles. Without trac reckon we are breaking less. Love to see these numbers

Where's binman to pull some gems from these stats and let us all know we're doomsdayers but we're precisely on track?!

He's gone missing recently, this is his thread isn't it?!

Bar Rivers entre' into the midfield and the progress of Windsor there hasn't been much to get excited about this season DZ.

70.5 is a big team rating for the Dogs and roughly where we were at in some matches in 2021.  We averaged 67.2 in the H&A season that year and posted a 69.5 in the GF

Daniels, with only 19% game time, pretty much matched the ratings of our two key small forwards in Pickett & Chandler!

Obviously they probably didn't get the service with inside 50s but regardless, we are nowhere near the level both in a form and a work rate sense since Round 9 vs the Blues which was three months ago now.

Yes Champion Data have a broken tackle stat but unfortunately not publicly available

Like so many other hidden stats they have 'locked away' in their safe.

So annoying and I'm convinced they have a deal with the broadcasters so those of us who like stats will still listen to carp commentary and media shows.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
