It's rather good these days. I've found since 4k that it takes maybe 30 seconds of buffering before the stream starts but once it does no problem.

Could be short drops on the wifi signal. With other streams you don't notice it because they cache 5 minutes or so ahead. With Sports streams the cache is only seconds

My TV is wired via ethernet so no wifi issues. Will let it buffer for a bit longer but I don't think it's that as it only happens on android TV app. I think it's just kayo having a [censored] app but wasn't sure if others experience the same issues.

Why not lodge a support ticket with Kayo

They are reasonably responsive

Media reporting that the Optus Sports (EPL etc) is almost certainly being bought by Stan. Will be announced within the week.

The speculated price is $600M paid in 6 x $100M instalments.

If Stan also gets the NRL rights plus the F1 rights (up for renewal in 2026) Kayo will be a long second to Stan.

Have never liked Stan because it sells the sports package as an add on to the normal entertainment package.

The Age which is owned by the same group who own Stan have been running strategic articles complaining of the AFL/Kayo Saturday blackout of FTA. Coincidence??

Stan also has the Europa and Champions League, it would be nice if they picked the Serie A too, and it would definitely be worth the subscription (at present $22 basic +$15 for sports)

Good point but if the big EPL fans are already subscribed so they can see Champions League there's no additional revenue from those fans

At $37 per month it's already almost at Kayo prices.

I tried to plug my TV into the ethernet but it kicked out the whole internet and I can't be bothered to get to the bottom of it yet so WIFI for now.

Halfway through the 3rd quarter every game I watch the frame rate starts going all jittery. Quality doesn't drop like in the old days but the stream becomes jittery, very weird.

Agreed, I also can’t stand the score banner, it takes up the full bottom of the screen, almost like they’re accounting for people with low vision. Surely it can be reduced to a smaller more standard size like it’s been forever.

I get this too, sort of goes a bit Benny Hill.

Btw after my last post I learned that you can't do a mesh setup with a TP-Link VR2800 modem/router. So if anyone is planning to mesh and looking at buying one of these second hand to save a few bucks like I did, don't.

The good mesh come with their own router.

The gold standard which I have is Orbi. If you have a large house they're a great investment. Had mine now for 5 odd years and still working seamlessly. Before that I had a central router and a slave router. It was ok but the handovers weren't great and often devices (bedroom TV's) wouldn't look for the nearest router. Extenders were a waste of money.. (believe me I bought a few).

Good luck with your connection.

My bugbear with Kayo is when it decides to drop the 4k connection for no reason. Luckily it seems to do it less this year

Always happy to try new stuff Jim, only reason I got TP-Link is because I've only ever had them so it's unconscious brand loyalty. The Orbi does look nice though and has everything you need.

And this one is fantastic for all things WIFI 5 related. I was keen to add the Deco Mesh but you can't add it to this one only the Archer VX1800v which is less of a premium product so it doesn't make sense.

The house isn't too big, just get a slight dead spot in the living room from time to time. Honestly I would solve a lot of problems if I connected the TV with ethernet and figure out why it's kicking everything out. I hope it's just a router configuration and nothing to do with the outlet itself!

I've found the best is buying some Ethernet Over Power (EOP) connectors. I use for TV, bedroom TV, PS5, work from home setup etc and works seamlessly. Only issue is with handheld devices relying on main wifi router but only seems to be an issue in front bedroom.

Talk today in the Age that they could move to a standalone sports streamer. My guess is that would sit at around $30.

If they get the NRL which given the Ch 9 link is likely it would be a force.

Apparently Nine is prepared to invest at least some of the proceeds from the sale of Domain into Stan

https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/nine-s-goal-to-become-home-of-soccer-with-english-premier-league-dream-20250623-p5m9nu.html

If Nine get the NRL the impact on the AFL media negotiations could be interesting to say the least

"Stan has reported 2.3m subscribers, but only a fraction of those also pay for sport."

They're getting PL for about $100M a season, At it peaks Optus had 1,000,000 subscribers.

They will want to hike the price but imagine they'd do that after year 1 of the PL deal to get people through first.

Or as you've said standalone service

Inspite of a new TV I find the Kayo picture to be the worst streaming product I use. The afl on kayo is terrible. At certain times last Saturday night it was unwatchable. I only have Kayo for Saturday afl matches. The strange thing is watching replays is much better and all non afl spirts are good.

My price quoted was for 4K so you can cheapen it a bit for HD or SD. Channel 9 probably will show no EPL on FTA, and the A league, which desperately needs the FTA exposure will get shafted again. I don't understand the logic for the Football Australia, not insisting on every game FTA and trying to grow the game, surely it makes sense in the long run.

It's money.

FTA will not pay anything of significance. Some sports pay the broadcaster (Netball IIRC did this via Gov't funding)

Two A League games per week on FTA might be a decent compromise

They would if they could tap into the potential that is there, unfortunately it's a merry go round, the football quality is "meh" and wont get better unless funds are found, to increase player payment, and that wont happen until the networks think it has an audience (and people wont watch if the football is substandard)

Any interest I had in the A-League died when they left Fox/Kayo. That's not to say they were better, but I've found the marketing and promotion of this league has completely fallen into the tank ever since. I wouldn't know anything about it right now at all, who is playing, when the Grand Final is, nothing.

It feels so closed off now like racing or skiing.

Local basketball league did the same thing after it left Channel 10 all those years ago.

It had a great spot in the early Sunday afternoon with recognised players and teams. Nowaday's other than the Jumping Jacks or whatever they're called I couldn't name a team

Nine Entertainment, which owns the streaming platform, is expected to pay about $60 million annually for the next three years to broadcast the league, two people briefed on the arrangement said. Optus will continue to pay $40 million every year over that time, despite giving up the rights.

With the minimum price to access Stan Sport at $27, it would take at least 185,000 new subscribers to cover the cost of the Premier League.

People familiar with Optus’ financial position said the streaming service was losing tens of millions of dollars under the current EPL deal.

https://www.afr.com/companies/sport/optus-to-subsidise-premier-league-in-multi-million-tie-up-with-stan-20250624-p5m9z3

Surely DAZN with his Saudi backing could have tipped in $180m for 3 years.

If correct Nine drove a hard bargain and moreover they have signalled to the EPL that the rights have almost halved in value since Optus bought them.

Amazing and should send a chill through those sports who thought that media rights only go one way price wise.

The decision not to buy Optus Streaming itself was another interesting element. The remaining sports on Optus will be concerned as to their future exposure

So Stan won the EPL rights (formally announced today) and also announced today a $5 per month price increase.

As Stan Sports is an add on to the movie/TV Stan the price is now $32 per month

Let the games begin

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
