dazn (which i refuse to call da zone, it's daz n all the way for me) is in ridiculous amounts of debt and have an appalling record for streaming services

their rollout for serie a coverage has seen them taken to court by the italian govt; their nfl gamepass has been riddled with bugs and errors

a friend of mine who said to me that this was 'on' over the weekend believes the tech is a huge part of the appeal for dazn, with the streaming set-up and capabilities of stream motion (kayo, binge) a possibly signficant improvement over their current architecture and core set-up, not to mention their design and usability

of course, the same was true when disney bought bamtech from the mlb only to get it, get the techs to look under the hood, and realise they'd been gordon farkas'd

Both Murdoch and the billionaire Dazn owner are in town.

Wouldn't you love to be a fly on that wall during the negotiations

The deal is done at 7 x EBITDA (chicken feed for a digital player) but at least News and Telstra get their loans repaid.

News Corp and Telstra will take a small equity position in DAZN. I suspect they would have preferred cash but perhaps they're hanging out for a bid by Saudi Arabia

What does it all mean for us... who knows

News Corp-controlled pay TV and streaming company Foxtel has been sold to DAZN, a sports streaming platform controlled by one of the world’s richest people, for an enterprise value of $3.4 billion.

News Corp will hold a minority (6 per cent) equity interest in DAZN and gain a seat on the company’s board of directors, it said in a statement to the market. Foxtel’s current debt will be refinanced, while News Corp and Telstra’s loans to the company of $578 million and $128 million respectively, will also be paid off.

Dazn does have worldwide rights to a lot of lower tier niche sports.

NRL are considering offering State of Origin as a separate package for streaming companies to bid on. Like the AFL it's protected by the anti siphoning laws but Vlandys is a powerful player.

We're seeing the AFL doing the same thing with "Streaming Saturdays". Gather Round is another easy target but would they dare offer the GF as a separate package. Personally I would pay say $50 for an ad free GF with bells and whistles such as alternative commentary, choice of camera angle and of course high quality sound and vision (4k minimum).

There's an old saying along the lines of "if you give them an inch they will take a mile"...I hope it never comes to this but can see it heading that way unfortunately.

thread watchers might be interested to know that it looks like ninefax are going to buy optus sport

negotations have been happening since december according to the afr (who should know, being a ninefax paper)

Makes sense in that Optus Sport was mainly a play to boost Optus mobile subscriptions.

The trouble with Stan is that it follows the old Foxtel model of sport only being available if you take out the base movie/tv subscription.

Definitely increases the profile of Stan if it goes ahead.

As an aside interesting to see that very few if any of the NFL play off games on Kayo are in 4k. US broadcasters still in the relative stone age.

Goes without saying Brownie, I can’t imagine why anyone would think otherwise!!!!!!!!

Kayo's price going up by $5.

$35 a month is now $40

You could see it coming but just as NRL and AFL start it's a bit in your face

At least they haven't done the Netflix trick of geo-limitation and thus eliminating sharing across two or more contributors.

Shared with another family member at $20 a month is not bad but they are slowly losing all peripheral sports.

Back in October I was cancelling my subscription till March. However they offered  $10/ month till March. So I agreed. At $40 / month for a second grade picture I wonder if it is worth it. In winter I have it for me and wife. 90% for AFL non 7 games. Often a couple of games a month. I might see who is offering deals over the approach to the season period.

There's always Darts. Having watched a few minutes I could believe there's scope for AFLX

Is there a timeframe for this?

Have that weird Fetch/ESPN Bundle, still upset the NHL stopped their season pass.

if you ask some former disney employees, it was meant to launch about two years ago, but got pushed back significantly due to resource strain

last i heard they were aiming for nfl 25/26 season launch, but i don't think they'll make that timeline at this point in time

Miss the days when all I needed was Foxtel and NHL Pass, now if I want to watch the same content as back then I need;

Kayo (Footy/Cricket/F1), Optus Sport (EPL, FA cup) , Paramount Plus (A-League), Stan (With add on) (Champions League/Europa League), BeIn Sport (Championship, Serie A, La Liga, League Cup), Fetch/Espn Pass (NHL), AppleTV (With Add on) (MLS). I dont have all of the above as a result.

Very interesting space atm, Foxtel/Binge lost WWE to Netflix and HBO seemingly want their own app. Curious to see how DAZN approach the next few years.

Optus sport want to sell their rights, The A-League will look to find a new home - They really should hitch their wagon to a streaming services with more games than the occasional Matildas/Socceroos game.

integration into an existing platform - disney ploose - would be easier than launching a new service

still no date other than in the 'coming months' - let's see if they get it sorted for the nba playoffs or if, as per previous timings, it's closer to september 2025 to tie into nfl season start

So assume it will have ESPN1 and ESPN2 on the Disney platform and then you get a login to the ESPN APP to cast the other live games, this is what I do with Fetch/NHL at present.  Curious that they say its staying on Foxtel/Fetch/Kayo etc, wonder how long that will last for. Kayo going up in price and losing content would be an interesting one.

Apparently the rights are due for re-negotiation around June. Even if non exclusive Fox/Kayo will be desperate to keep them given their lack of summer product.

Kayo is fast becoming a six month service with a little bit extra of F1. Its cricket is good but it's not enough to underwrite the summer season. Their saviour would be quality soccer
