2023 Player Reviews: #41 Judd McVee

Salem has already played some midfield time this season with mixed results.

...when Bowey comes back does he move back into the rotations.

Probably.

McVee's defensive game is too strong to move just yet and it's good to have quality ball use coming out of the back half but then again Howes has been a surprise package with his contested and defensive play.

At least we have some good options.

Playing AMW off half back at Casey...wonder if we see him here or is it a taste of what he needs as a forward?

Anyway this is a McVee thread and the kid has been a real surprise package since coming into the team last season.

Has so much more to offer and we just got a good look at that last night...

The kid has massive upside and his current play is special. I trust the club will nurture him in the right direction and position.

Just sign him up long term.

As a rookie listed player, is he a free agent at the end of a contract?

I don’t think so Demonstrrative I think that only applied to JJ because he was drafted and then put on the Rookie List, once he was elevated back to senior list ha became UFA at  the end of his contract.

and the most annoying thing is that basically doesn't apply any more

we got stuffed by an arbitrary rule change that has since changed, again

In 2023 he amazed me with his calmness

In 2024 he amazes with even more calmness and unbelievable mature thinking and disposal to advantage, under pressure. He is becoming a leader of the backline and it is hard to believe he has played just 30 games and is only 20 yo. Lock him in for a decade

Incredible.  McVee was a standout addition in 2023.  His composure and skill.  Now in 2024 he’s showing even more resilience and his ability to control and deliver efficiently is next level. He shut down Rankine and again was one of our best on the night. 👏👏👏👏

From the AFL Website: ( things we liked at round 4)

Congrats to Judd and the recruiting team. Great to see Judd getting external recognition

2) The Demons recruiters have done it again

You can firmly mark Judd McVee down as yet another Melbourne recruiting masterstroke. The young West Australian, who enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, continues to take strides across half-back and has now entrenched himself as one of the club's most important players. Recruited with the 16th selection in the 2021 rookie draft, McVee was outstanding in quietening the raucous Adelaide Oval atmosphere in the early stages of Thursday night's win over the Crows. He had 11 disposals in the first quarter alone and finished with 20 touches to go with four marks, 10 intercepts and four score involvements.  – Riley Beveridge

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
