because newton seems to have a fragile state of mind and hasnt been able to show yet that he will be able to stand up to the pressure of afl football.

He would have made the forward line even more crowded and I reckon we would have seen Neita implode and just belt the living crap out of anyone and everyone.

If we want to play him, at least one tall has to go first.

Rivers, McLean and Wheels would have made a huge difference today. Newton wouldn't have.

based on his ability to go missing, not only weekly, but on a quarter by quarter basis, for sandy, and in the preseason intraclub practice match.

he has kicked 11 goals the last two weeks for sandy in 6 good quarters of footy. he has fantastic hands, a great leap, a lovely kick, is clean beneath his knees. we have had our two key forwards out for most of the year. colin garland was selected ahead of him even though he hasnt been setting the world on fire. all this and still the coaching staff (who are the people who know best) havnt picked him for the afl side yet. if that doesnt tell you something your not actually paying attention. if you want to know more about newton, read one of the many dedicated newton threads that have been around the past two weeks. im a fan and would like to see him get a go, but not until he is ready, and every indication is that he is not.

Most of it refers to the ratty performance by Newton in the Channel 7 warm-up Intra Club Telstra Dome match. He seems to me to be well over this, as we should be.

This reminds me of the old family story involving my father and his mother. Seems my dad was not allowed to go swimming (this was on the Murray, near Tooleybuc) "until he could swim". Might I be so bold as to suggest that Newton's input, should he have been allowed to play today, would have matched either of our nominal key forwards.

you can suggest that but i see your grandparents point. if your dad couldnt swim there is no way he should be allowed to go off and swim in the murray. if his parents let him they'd be ireesponsible. what should happen is that he should take swimming lessons and be taught how to handle himself in the water until he is confident and his parents are confident he wont drown.

or perhaps the coaching staff looked and said. wow, we have key forwards a plenty in this side, the last thing we need is another. the only way one would play is by dropping one. the captains going no where. dunn has been good. miler is still our leading goal kicker. holland, while playing back is a reserve forward in some way, in case anything goes wrong.

who would you have dropped for newton?

The old man taught himself to swim in their dam (which was also out of bounds) but upon announcing that indeed he could now "swim" he was allowed to go for his life. Even saved a couple of people apparently (to continue the analogy).

Miller is a one-trick pony (mark-handball-take poor option) and the sooner we look beyond him the better. "Ya can't drop Neita, he starightens us up". Neitz will be allowed again to plod himself into some sort of touch.

so you want to drop our current leading goalkicker, and one of our best performed players for rounds 1-5, for newton?

im not saying newton shouldnt be getting a go, id love to see him play. but if the coaching staff dont think he is ready just yet, i'll back them in. miller has now played 2 average games in a row...

for what its worth, miller current is averageing more disposals, more tackles, and more goals, than ever in his career. that doesnt mean he is performing well, its just an interesting stat. his handball to kick ratio is up tho...

Newton is still a way off surely. Let alone giving us a focal point up forward.

Who said Newton would have to play at Full Forward on Harris? He has played half forward and wing for Sandy.

spot on rumpole , newton wouldn ve only needed 3 kicks to have played as well as Neita, we needed leadership today and didn t get it.

guys i was just reading newtons profile on the mfc website and it was interesting to read that he'd missed most of his first year on our club list with a back injury, something i'd forgotten about...

he only turned 20 a week and a half ago, he has had 3 years in the system, one of which he was injured, and he is a developing tall who tend to take longer. its also interesting to note that he played on a wing in his junior days and on when he played senior footy, not up forward...nut he is 193cm and 92kgs.

i think we need to realise that this kid isnt going to get a jumper and be a star, and its not as simple as this is his 4tf year he should be in there now...

this isnt his 4th year deanox, only his 3rd, same as bate and dunn

his chance for a game was when robbo and neitz were both out, dunn came back in, and they needed another tall, and garland came in instead

if he continues to kick bags at sandy consistantly, ND will no choice but to bring him up, but until he puts 4 weeks or together (much like jack reiwoldt) he will keep playing at sandy

sorry my mistake. but that just backs my point further...he has had 2 years, one of which he was out injured...this is effectively his second year then, when as a developing forward thats hardly any time...
