    With recruiting veterans, there is always going to be some element of risk in terms of performance towards the end.

    At Melbourne, we got great value out of Leiws for most of his contract.  Eventually he became pretty marginal as a player, but I'm sure the value he bought to our culture from finals sucess etc was invaluable.  Even if he makes no further contribution, I think BBB was an important ingredient to our 2021 premiership.

    Similarly Brisbane got pretty good value out of Hodge and who knows what mentoring Gunstan might provide off the feild that might help the further development of Brisbane's forwards.

    Bothe Rich and Gunston have been considered A graders, perhaps even elite players at stages of their careers. Neither are playing well and are man enough to admit it. I say good on them and it'll be interesting whether they make it back to being useful players in the Brisbane line up.

    I admire the attitude of these guys but it comes back to the authority that the coach and selection committee have. Say that these guys aren't playing well as they seem to think, but what if Fagan doesn't want to drop them? What if his idea of form is different to the player and he might have a different role in mind for them for tonight's game. The decision from these players to drop themselves takes this out of the coach's hands and slightly undermines them in my view.

    Say that ANB or Spargo felt they were out of form and went straight up to Goody and said "We believe we are letting the team down and it is definitely true because a bunch of people on Demonland think so, We're hereby dropping ourselves".

    Where would Goody's system be if players dictated selection the same way? Like I said, I admire the act but it doesn't sit right 100%.

    I'd be very surprised if the coach and match committee were blind-sided by Gunston's and Rich's decisions. I think it's more likely that their decisions were made after each had had a discussion with the coach about what their immediate future holds. That doesn't necessarily mean that Gunston and Rich jumped because they had been forewarned they may be dropped, though.

    Yes I'd be surprised too and I would hope that they came to a mutual decision.

    Based on this after any given match half our players would be dropping themselves.

    But LOL at the thought of ANB or Spargo or any player actually saying this to Goody. 🤣

      Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win.
