Now he plays for West Coast.

And always one of my favourites -so exhilarating to watch, especially when he and Lingers waxed it.

Or even before that, Chris Lewis biting Todd Viney. And them still defending it.  I have a long memory.  In so many ways it was far worse than their defending Andrew Gaff's punching Andrew Brayshaw.  It's why I don't understand why some Demonlanders hate Freo more than West Coast - WCE supporters are the Collingwood of the west.  I think it's why it hurt when Hunt went to WCE.

I think many dislike Freo circa Peter Bell because of Hogan and LJ. I reckon most still dislike West Coast more though.

Oh, jeez, I feel for you.  Reminds me of my 1988 GF experience.  All my mum's side of the family are Hawthorn supporters.  After the game, we were dragged to, get this, Glenferrie Oval.  I was a miserable 17 year old in Hawthorn with my older brother and dad all wearing red and blue, surrounded by hoards of poo and wee in celebratory mode.  Pure torture.  My cousin had a tape recorder playing "happy team at Hawthorn" again and again - he was so lucky that thing wasn't thrown on the train tracks.

I get that.  I have respect for their supporters, though, they go through hell in that town. The media over there are so WCE happy.

Yikes, at least in the women's toilets we had those kind of black half seat things.  No proper mirror, though, just a sheet of metal bolted to the wall that distorted the reflection so much you thought you were at Luna Park.  I do have some happy memories at VFL Park (could never get around to calling it Waverley), beating WCE in the elimination final in 1988 is up there, as is beating Carlton in the Prelim that same year.  Plus the 1987 and 1989 night grand finals.

Here are some things these delightful people said on reddit a couple of days ago:

  • Melbourne were dog[censored] in 2019 after we demolished them in the 2018 prelim

  • God what a [censored] day that was, was almost as good as winning the grand final. I just remember all the media saying Melbourne were the favourites, they were so desperate for it to be melbournes year and for us, the team predicted to not even make finals, to absolutely blow them out of the water was just chefs kiss

  • It was also made more delicious by them wanting to be able to beam in video of Melbourne supporters to negate our home crowd advantage. In retrospect I kind of wish they went ahead with it

The most satifying thing about this is the fact we haven't lost at this ground since Round 1 2020.  And we did something at that ground that WCE can never do, and that's win a premiership.

I remember listening to a game on the radio when we lost to WCE by 100 points, maybe around 2013-15, and we were so bad that I almost wanted them to lose by 100 for some weird, sick reason! God we were in the absolute depths back then. I’d love to win by 100 for some belated revenge.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think that was the last time we hosted WCE at the MCG.  I know it's been a while since we've played them on our home turf.

Probs not a popular opinion, but I wouldn’t have crucified Gaff for that incident. Yes, Andy Brayshaw had to eat through a straw for months afterwards, and yes, there’s no place in the game for that. But this was totally uncharacteristic of Andrew Gaff. He wasn’t a grub of a player. He snapped. It happens. He got eight weeks for it. There’s no shortage of way worse offenders.

PS I used to detest the Eagles. Now that Jayden’s with them, I can’t. Note I said he’s ‘with them’ and not ‘one of them’ coz he’ll ALWAYS be a demon to me. And no, I’m not crying, I’ve just got something in my eye.

The year is 2015.
You've just been told that the Dees will play Essendon in Adelaide BEFORE they play WCE in Melbourne.

I was making it more about the WCE supporters' response from the incident, the way they carried on about it was that Brayshaw deserved it. The way they cheered when it was replayed on the screen after it happened. The way they still talk about it on social media. It was despicable behaviour from the fans.

You’re right Kat. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, during training, Andrew Gaff was lining up for a shot and some of his teammates were heard to be “encouraging” him by calling out “Brayshaw” That sort of thing is not on. Nor is what you described above. But the actual incident is to what I was referring.

Ah, there you go, I must have missed that! Still, there were some weird matches in 2020, thanks to the 'rona :).

it was one of many in that time.  I still have in my deepest darkest memories being teased by my grandfather in the aftermath of the 87 prelim.  I was staying at my grandparents' house in Camberwell while my parents were in Queensland, and as soon as the game ended, I did the whole dramatic thing of running off to my mother's childhood bedroom, closing the door and throwing myself violently on the bed in full wail mode.  I could hear Pa laughing at me and Grandma telling him off like he was a school bully.  I was 16, it's the first time I remember crying over a football game.  Growing up a Melbourne supporter in the 80s with Hawthorn supporting relatives is not all it's cracked up to be :)

Disagree, firstly WC is interstate, secondly all the above mentioned that's wrong with them and lastly it's WC. I don't care what player has been traded to them, they are and always will be worse then Essendon.

I hate west coast, probably my 3rd most hated team. Chris Lewis biting Todd Viney was a dog act but he copped so much during his career I'm willing to forgive.

I agree with you. However, just to clarify, is the Lewis incident with Viney directly related to vilification in that specific match?

You’re inciting violence right here, Azz! Jayden’s not just any old player, and WCE are nowhere near as bad as that deplorable red and black pimple on the face of the earth.

Now leave it at that. Don’t get me started on this. I’ll take you down, Azz-boy. 😁

That is truly pathetic.  What a disgusting team culture they must have!

I'm not sure, I hope not.  But that's not what the WCE fans use to defend it, they maintain Viney deliberately put his finger in Lewis' mouth.  Kinda weird, but anyway.

But if it was vilification, it can certainly explain Lewis' behaviour.  Doesn't excuse it, but it explains it.

FWIW Gaff didn’t hear them calling out at the time and was very upset when he was told about it afterwards. But yeah, the overall culture stinks.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
