Welcome to Day 3 of the quiz and a sporting gesture. If recent history is any indication this should all be done and dusted today.

You got me covered WCW, all I’ve been able to come up with is the majority of players on the list have had more than 1 jumper number throughout their career.

With respect BA, you’re as far from the answer as you could possibly be. And then even a little bit further. 😂

According to Witches Hat, I’m very close to cracking it and have been pretty much from the outset. Therefore I’m not about to pull up stumps just yet. I’ve come too far to do that now.

Maybe  @Witches Hatwill allow me to PM you with what I know and if you can come up with the missing piece of the puzzle we can go halvsies on bragging rights. 🤭

What do I have to do to get such largesse, from you and @Witches Hat?

And you flatter me with your desire to best me. Recent performance warrants it not!

WH gave out a clue, which by the lack of reaction, seems to have gone through to the keeper.

In a bid to move this along a bit the selectors have swung the axe.

IN: Harry Taylor, George Young, Jeff Berry and Leigh Matthews.

OUT: Sam Taylor, Hayden Young, Jarrod Berry and Ben Matthews.

That now gives the 22 footballers some common territory.

Soz,Tim. But while your recent performance may be nothing to write home about, your performance overall is better than mine.

WCW gave an extra clue in her last post

This bites! These clues don’t help me at all since I already knew this part of the puzzle. So, now every man and his dog will be level-pegged with me.

Please @Witches Hat, give another clue that doesn’t refer to this aspect of the answer.

Those still playing the quiz are now all on the same page so I can reveal that all surnames have represented Victoria in cricket.

The clues to this link were Tony Jewell as a relatively easy choice as coach (his son Nick played cricket for the Vics) and the selection changes which meant the 22 footballers all played for a Victorian team at some point in their careers.

Still two other facts to link the names.

It's coming down to the home stretch. Who will take it out??

Still a few in contention. Perhaps this will help.

The cricketer is Jonathon Moss, not Jeff Moss. Jeff Moss is over qualified.

If I were as talented a wordsmith as @Demonstone I would have manufactured a clue along the lines of "a Rolling Stone gathers no Moss" but I'm not so I won't.

HB: Peter Young      Travis Dean      Matt Short

C: Slug Jordon     Graham Matthews      Michael Hill

F: Grant Gardiner     Peter Roach     Peter Bedford

All represented Victoria in cricket.

All made at least one century for Victoria.

Congratulations on what eventually proved to be quite an accessible quiz, WH! The '3 links' was an interesting twist.

And congrats to all participants, whichever of Grade (me*), District (@Bombay Airconditioning), State (@WalkingCivilWar) or Test (your winners) level they reached.

* I have taken some very minor comfort from having understood that 'relatively' was a clue of the effect you intended.

Thanks to @Witches Hat for putting on the quiz. I was a BBB set shot run up away with my line of thinking until @WalkingCivilWar got me on track. We had a few theories but none were correct. @mo64you must really know your cricket to have answered correctly in 3 hours, we’ll played. @Timothy Reddan-A'BlewIf you’re looking at putting together a quiz can we do movies please, preferably action, maybe late 80’s and 90’s so I’m in with a chance🤣🤣.

cheers

I am, BA! I like that thought, but I'll have to spring it on our little coterie unawares. Or devilishly disguise it, perhaps...mwah ha ha ha!

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
