The round 1 1989 game is silent and has no on screen graphics, I think it was taken from a master tape with no commentary or anything. If anyone knows how to source an old radio call of the game let me know and I will sync it up.

Here's another heart stopper against the Eagles DZ, we were making a habit of it against them 🙂

I found this on Facebook today:-

Happy Birthday Jeff Chapman AM.

Chapman is a one-time forward playing 2 senior games for the Melbourne Football Club in 1966. He is founder of fund manager Bennelong Group.

The 1965 Hawthorn Annual Report trumpeted the signing of Chapman, but he signed with the Demons after becoming friendly with Peter Smith and Ross Dillon. Training with the side in the 1966 pre-season the deal for the former Carey school football captain was sealed when he booted 7.8 in a practice match.

He later went on to found Sportsworld Media and make 75 million pounds from its sale in 2002. He amassed a total fortune of over $500m in sports marketing, media and property. He also owned 35 golf clubs around the world.

On 26 January 2019, Chapman was appointed as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia as part of the Australia Day honours, receiving the award "for significant service to the community through philanthropic initiatives".

Amazing. I still remember all the coodabeen champions Norm Smith had amassed at the start of '66 season who were going to bring the Dees back to glory, inc. Sid Catlin, Ed Burston, Kerry Rattray, Vearing, Ken Jungwirth. Alas, decades of despair were to follow!

Looking forward to this now, @Dr. Gonzo:

[From Wikipedia] "The wettest Melbourne winter since 1952 saw horrible conditions between Rounds 11 and 13 that produced several unusually low scores".

Thanks for the great work!

One for the ages, this one.

At half-time we were 1.11.17. And were in front!!

Buried them in the second half with an avalanche of goals to finish with 6.16.52.

Classic!

The next one is Queens bday game v Hawks in a quagmire at Princes Park. Round 12 we play the Cats in another mudheap at the G, can't remember the G being such a state before or since.

Has the G ever been in worse condition than this?

This game was every bit as scarring to me as a kid as ANZAC Day 92 (up 47 points vs Essendon and losing), 88 and 2000 GFs, 186 etc Only kicking 2 goals for an entire game, my 7 year old brain couldn't comprehend it! Especially after beating the Hawks the week before and the run we'd been on the couple of months prior.

PS @binman I found you in the crowd and used as the thumbnail 😂😂😂

Darryl Cumming, a member of the Tigers’ 1975 premiership side who also played for Melbourne, North Melbourne and South Melbourne throughout the 1970s, passed away this week. He played 10 games and scored 7 goals for the Demons in 1977. Cumming was a skilled rover known for his agility but he just couldn’t establish himself with the Demons.

On that subject, has anyone seen themselves, or others they know, in any of these videos?

A nice little(?) curiosity layer to the Doctor's good work.

If you check out 3/4 time during the Hawks game at Princes Park above I kept in some footage of the crowd when Northey brought the players over near the supporters on the far wing. I've edited most of these videos to clip the length during the quarter and half time breaks but many of these video's have footage of the crowd interspersed when it's taken from a non-broadcast feed (eg the Hawks and Cats games above).

Here's the next game after the debacle against the Cats and back on the winners list.

After that great win against the Cats, and a great performance by Lyon kicking 3 goals, we were 2nd on the ladder behind only the Hawks by one game (and a hefty amount of percentage).

Lyon did not play for the rest of the year and without him our fortunes tumbled. 3 lossess on the trot to Carlton, Fitzroy and Hawthorn before sneaking back on the winners board against the Swans and back to back to losses to the Saints and Bombers to limp into the finals. Luckily we had done enough to sew up a finals spot earlier in the year but our form heading in was far from good and would require a run every bit as miraculous as the year before to equal our 1988 feats and go one better.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
