Barry Pendergast drafted the AA captain and Melbourne's first premiership captain in 57 years with a late pick. We can thank him for that.

And TMac as well. Craig Cameron’s list is also loaded with talent but Jason Taylor what more could you ask.

BPs team had much unrealized potential.

Cameron's side under achieved. Losing Jolly and Thompson hurt.Out of the 22 only Bate and Wonaeamirri under achieved.

Prendergast was a disaster only 2 out of 30 picks are up to AFL level.

Taylor won us a premiership. 15 premiership players in there.

Not including trades. Cameron had Powell, Ingerson and Shanahan while Prendergast had Clark while Taylor had May, Lever, Langdon, Hibberd, Melksham, B.Brown and Vince.

Watts and Gysberts were both early picks and failed, both went on to other clubs and didn't succeed their either. Says to me it wasn't our development that was lacking. Our recruiting didn't recognise competitiveness like they do now.

I doubt JT would have taken either of them.

Watts was hardly a failure. Would have played 200 games if not for breaking his leg. He was a lot better than some other no 1 picks.

He & Nic Nat were universally predicted to go 1 & 2 that year.

JT doesn't have a habit of drafting players universally selected in phantom drafts.

Unusually off point here - Cameron drafted Chris Lamb, Cale Morton, Addam Maric, Jack Grimes who all underachieved.  The concept of using teams doesnt work because of tenure length differences.  Youve also not put forward the best 22s.  James Magner would be in Prendergasts as an example.

To say Prendergast only drafted two AFL calibre players is Spiritedly wide of the mark and unfair to at least a few of Howe, Jetta, Tom McDonald, Scully, Watts and Jurrah.  Of course he wasnt a good recruiter but he still made some very good picks and Gysberts was traded for Cam Pedersen and the origin points of Fritsch, May and Sparrow’s careers come from Prendergast’s recruiting.  He also had the worst coach in Melbourne’s history using his talent and interfering.

There are some very ordinary players on the first two lists :

eg Cameron with Bate and Miller on the HF Line

eg Pedders with a Centre Line of Blease, Mckenzie and Bail.

I will never forget Cameron saying he didn't rate Eddie Betts

Pendergast didn't even bother speaking to Dusty when we had pick 1 and 2 in that draft.

I think that's worse.

Where is Viney? If F/son doesn't count Stretch shouldn't be in there.

Viney was picked up by his father.

Worth noting that Taylor also 'lost out' on the opportunity to use a number of 1st and 2nd rounders when they were traded for May, Lever, Langer, Brown, etc

Under the father son rule, like Stretch

PRENDERGAST had left before that draft, and Taylor hadn't started so Todd went into that draft as the acting head of recruiting.

I have it on good authority he was drinking heavily that day and wasn’t himself

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
