Who will be captain next week?

Featured Replies

Who is going to stand-in and stand-up for the side as Captain this week.

Given we have injuries to Neita and Brock is out, the only players left in the leadership group are Green, Bruce and Junior.

On form over the past week or so.. Macca for mine... but given all the talk on this subject lately, theres bound to be opinion.

Oooh. GREAT thread. How did we miss this chance to gasbag on about who's going to be skipper.

Well obviously given the 4 week prognosis we have the option to rotate skippers. I'm all for the Green/Bruce experiment of last year to continue for now, but any of the three remaining leaders is fine by me really.

If it had to be one of them... Bugger me I don't know. Probably Bruce...

Yeah Junior for mine.

I'm going to say Miller.

I know he isn't in the leadership group anymore, but he is still a leader. So he won't be breaking through the banner, or tossing the coin, but he will still lead.

It is the only bit of hope I have left for the season... Miller proving everyone wrong.

In an official capacity, they will most likely give it to Bruce, which will further highlight why McLean is our next captain.

Junior, no contest

Softies need not apply

I realise Green seemed like he took to it well, but it seems to me that Bruce is a fraction ahead of him in the race for the job full time.

Are we looking to give a guy who looks like they may do the job next year a go? If so, then Brock. Since he's out too... Ooooh you get my drift... I have no idea, and frankly based on this weeks form I'm not inspred to pick any of them.

No doubt it will come out of the leadership group.

But Jaded's case in point re Miller is not lost on me even thou more than likely it was expressed through sheer frustration.

Out there on Monday he showed some ticker whereas a lot of others didn't.

It will be interesting.

It has to be Bruce as stand in captain........he is the only realistic option besides McLean, and he is the one who will be vying for the job with McLean when Neitz hands over the mantle.

This is his chance to show what he's got!

Bruce's performances this year havent warrented the honour of being captain, however saying this, green and McDonald havent litten the world on fire, so for reward on a top year last year im saying macca.

Bruce didn't have a top year last year in your eyes? He was every bit as good as McDonald last year, and the only reason he didn't get AA was because are too many of his sort around the country.

Bruce to captain the side in the absence of Neitz.

I think Rivo would relish the chance to lead the boys out. IMO he is one of the TRUE leaders around the club.

Rivo for me thanks demonland.

He isn't part of the leadership group, and therefore cannot be stand in captain.

Who cares? We now have a diminished leadership group and not a lot to draw on. Regardless, Bruce is a cert to be El Capitain next Sunday. It's of little consequence anyway because if the mid-group of players don't stand up he's suddenly captain of the Titanic. And we know what happened to him.

It's a pity, but Wrathchild is right. Rivers should be the man. He showed a lot in this area on Saturday, key position, directs the backline and a great reader of the ball.

The rest need to focus on their own games and get a kick.

Rivers will do that AND show direction.

Where did i say bruce didnt have a good year last year?? but it was nowhere near mcdonalds!!

The reason bruce didnt get AA is that he wasnt good enough... plain and simple!!

Macca and bruce play the same position, Midfield, to say that there are more Bruces' than mcdonalds is silly. If anything there are less bruce's because he has the ability to play forward and back in stints too.

Giving bruce the captaincy would be rewarding recievers who do well when we are winning and not rewarding the person who actually goes in and gets them the ball when the going is tough

500% agree - One of the true leaders on the ground. His actions are inspirational.

Might just help our cause of keeping him in Vic for his entire career.

I'm on the Jared Rivers for captain bandwagon.

Rivers for mine would make a great captain, but they gotta give it to one of the leadership group.

Bruce for captain.

I like the idea of Rivers, but I reckon he;s going to have enough on his mind stopping all these Greek Gods that are apparently playing for the cats on the weekend.

Clearly it comes from Bruce and JMac for this week. Green just hasn't got the form yet...

I say Bruce, JMac, then Green. After that we'll see.

based on last weeks form it should be miller. but it wont be.

i think we put too much on miller after a few good games a couple of years ago. people were saying 'future captain' etc comparing him to garry lyon, but he needed to find his own spot first. i think he will have a s0olid year. if he plays 20 more games like last week he will go close to being our most important player. i think in a few years, if his on field performances continue, he will be a great leader at the club, and perhaps a vice captain. but none of this means squat if he doesnt play good footy. so brad, dont worry about the other stuff, worry about the pill!

and for this week, it will be bruce, but id rather it be rivers. why not carrol, bring some mongrel to the team?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
