The whole league gets shaken up to introduce a new team and I’m not in love with the idea of doing this for a team that’ll be all of the locals’ “2nd favourite team”. Having said all of that, I think it is a wise choice for future economic benefit in the state and will benefit the next generation. Early years will be strange though. Tasmanian critics like Richard Flanagan say Tasmania can’t afford to pay for the team - there is no future economic benefit. 1 Quote

I would also be interested to hear from anyone else on Demonland who is Tasmanian regarding the same question. Will you swap teams? Will you buy membership to one or both clubs? I will buy my interstate MFC membership as usual but also support the local team. Looking forward to taking the grandkids along without me really caring about the result as I would an MFC game. 5 Quote

AFL team, VFL team (maybe) U18 team (maybe), AFLW team. level2. NTFA, NWFU, STFL (seniors, 2nds, U18 for both men and women) and i agree about the development/pathways necessities. a lot of work, a lot of time but need to establish a clear vision of target structure as soon as possible Our U18 team were reasonably competitive this year - TFC (that's what they are called) should have 3 regional development groups which get together as needed. The burden of travel is too much for kids and their families so need to do it strategically. Quote

I'd much rather prefer to have moved to Hobart. Better food and culture, if you know where to look! I think AFL players are being precious if they don't want to move to Tassie. I'm the proud uncle of an AFLW captain (sadly not MFC) and they were part of the recent CBA negotiations. There was a lot of discussion about the Tassie team as part of this process as it was an unknown factor in all of this. The general consensus was that a lot of 23-24yo male players who would be willing to move - affordable housing, much shorter travel times to and from training, and the opportunity to play more important roles for their team. My niece currently travels 1.5 hours to training in peak hour traffic after work as a VCE teacher. The AFLW will, for some years yet, rely on the majority of players having 'real jobs'. They reckon the appeal for the AFLW players of reduced travel time will be significant. It will also attract teachers, nurses, physios, students and tradies which make up most of the teams to Tasmania which is struggling to fill these positions. Just get it done. 5 Quote

Although anyone who went to the North Melbourne vs Richmond Friday night game at Blundstone a few years back will know how cold it can get. Coldest I've ever been in my life. But as dear old mum says, there's no such thing as being too cold, you're just inappropriately dressed. I will never forget that game - similarly cold as I've ever been. Worse the wife is a Toiges fan so insisted we stay after 1/2 time. She was done by 3/4 time. I don't think they'll schedule too many night games mid-winter again. 1 Quote

You underestimate the significance of "The Map" to Tasmanian footbal history. It was in this jumper that Tassie beat Vic in a state of origin game - The Febeys were part of that victory. 1 Quote

But when I talk to Tassie people they seem very divided eg ppl in Launceston would not support a Hobart team and Hobart people wouldn't support a Launceston team. The obvious solution is to play games at both but some say that satisfies neither. Unless they are able to get on the same page, I can't see the tassie team working for a while yet. Hobart doesn't need Launceston to be successful. Tourists will love coming to Hobart if only to visit MONA among the many attractions. Cataract Gorge is as bit Lonny can do. Quote

Still, I'm unsure why a shiny new stadium is needed to seal the deal, especially reading that it's only going to have a capacity of 25k. Doesn't seem worth it to me. Why not use a fraction of the funding for the new stadium and use it to redevelop Bellerive Oval instead? Bellerive has no potential for further development and is totally unsuited for such a venture. Quote

Agree, plus it's in a residential area, it has covenants for for noise, light and how long an event is allowed to run for, no options for public transport. Tas Cricket has already announced that they plan to exit the ground as well. Suburban grounds don't make good stadiums. A stadium needs to be close to the heart of the city. 1 Quote
leave it to deever 17,618 Posted March 16, 2024 Posted March 16, 2024 I know I'll get uproar for this but I'm not sure I want a Tasmanian club. Well if I do, I would like to eliminate gws or Gcs. Preferably the latter. My response is from a totally selfish perspective. More clubs increases the difficulty of winning a flag. Ok it's exciting having a national comp. But the in old days of 12 clubs you were more likely to win a cup than today's 18. And while Tassie may not be a powerhouse like some istate clubs we have seen, it's possible it will get favored treatment and have unfair advantages. Also look at the competition that Gws offer in such a short amount of time. Food for thought. 2 Quote
