Neither Jackson or Weideman is a genuine ruckman, and both should be allowed to develop elsewhere. Bradtke has done nothing. Gawn will be 29 shortly and suffers a serious injury every three years or so.

We desperately need a genuine backup at low cost and McKernan would have fit the bill nicely.

As an aside, what is it in for us to be trading Preuss? A third round pick has little value. I'd rather hold him to his contract.

Isn't the reason we drafted Jackson was that he was a ruck like Grundy only better mobility.  He isn't ready to take the No1 mantle for a couple of years but he will be primed when either Max or Nik Nat retire.

Not that im for McKernan coming to us, but Tony Sheahan has been so far off the mark this year so wouldnt read much into it. Imagine thinking a player would make the basis of their decision on playing at a certain stadium?

This is exactly my point, just because a player is tall and occasionally contests a ruck doesn't mean they are a "utility" player.

I've never even said he's utility ! But unless you're going into a game with two dedicated rucks like the Eagles, Power, Lions and Tigers (for most of the year) your forwards do have to pinch hit in the ruck. Mckernan is a utility and not a dedicated ruck so I'm just struggling to wrap my head around this move.

So why do you think Weed is a utility player then?

I don't think he's a utility and havent said anything of the like here...but unless we find another pure ruckman this trade period he will have to pinch hit in the ruck with Jackson.

He's an ordinary player. Nothing lost - move on.

People who watch VFL / training will be better placed to comment, but I thought Bradtke was actually showing a bit natural instincts as a forward that in the ruck?

I'm not against us going after a ruck as insurance - yes we could play tomlinson / weid / jacko in the ruck, but we don't want to be forced to do that if they're all playing well in other positions.

Austens dad walks his dog at the same park as I do and we identify each other with our MFC masks. Dad reckons Austen was enjoying hub life and as the season progressed the club were very happy with his progress and development. However he is still developing and it would help if he was not the lone ruckman in the 2nds. I can see the value in a seasoned ruckman to work with Austen and manage his workloads. I really like the idea in another post of Phillips coming from Essendon to fill this role.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
