We're the best in the league at needing to atone, earn back respect , redeem ourselves, etc , etc.
Sick of listening to it.

As Dennis Pagan would say ..... "Just show me the baby."

The great Reverend spoke to the boys in 2017 or 18 and coined the phrase I'm not interested in what you say, "When all is said and done, more is said than done."

He followed up with why not us, and they lifted for a period.

Now is the time for this team to progress to consistent effort week in week out, quarter by quarter and in a couple of years genuine flag tilt

The why not us speech was before the Queens birthday game in 2018 wasn’t it?  I’d argue we dropped off for 4-5 weeks, not because of lack of effort but from a worsening of structures due to an overhyped all in to get the ball mentality.

It surprises me that supporters continually harp on about players not putting in consistent effort.  That is 100% not the problem on game day.  Every player has a GPS measuring every heartbeat, metres covered, accelerations etc etc. How to you think they hide their lack of effort from the fitness staff and coaches?  I’ll answer for you they don’t.  The staff know how well they prepare preseason - cue members forum and only 2 players doing more than 50% of preseason loads.

Last year it was clear, especially in hindsight to supporters who attended the forum, the team was overall not fit, probably had diets that were detrimental to their endurance, and to my eye looked like they lost strength.  We will see how the 4 qtr efforts are this year, but I would expect a return to 2018 where we were one of the best second half teams in the league, rather than the 2019 version where we were the worst.

Alright, this is the kind of off-season banter I can really get behind.

Of the quintessential Expensive Winos line-up, none that I’m aware of have actually lived here, but Charley Drayton frequents these parts fairly regularly. He was married to the late great Chrissie Amphlett and officially opened Amphlett Lane in the CBD. He now plays drums for Cold Chisel (!), though in the Winos he mostly played bass. Oh and he also played the drums on “Love Shack”.

Ok, back to footy (if we must).

Interesting you mention Charlie and the Divinyls.

Jerome Smith, who 'Biffen' mentioned...took over the touring bass role with Keiths band the x-pensive winos...

Jerome came here to play with the Divinyls in the early '90's around the same time Charlie joined the band.

He still lives in Melbourne...

Back to the footy...

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
