Great photo which sums up the world today. Notice how three of the adults in the background are more interested in their digital devices than the live action itself.

Bless their hearts!

I was there yesterday, my 2c, Jackson is FAST....glides across the ground he looks something special, small for a ruckman at this stage at least though....presents more like a big midfielder.

I too attended yesterday, The only benefit of the lack of some of the senior boys being at Melksham’s wedding weekend was that it made it easier to focus on some of the lesser lights. As far as standouts, Jetta has his step and bounce back and is far from spent. Smith and Lever both looked great until they had to kick to a target (heart in mouth stuff). Dunkley did not appear about (unsure if I missed or anything in it) but of those pressing Sparrow was just fast and clean in everything he did and has a nice mix of inside and outside carry. ANB has the pressure forward spot sewn up unless we play two (not unlikely) and Petty would be my first choice to partner TMac (not that Weid or Brown were bad). Other than the above Salem and Viney were in everything and Fritsch and Petracca did things on a different level than the rest on show.

thanks for the info!

maybe he just seems small as he is so agile?  at almost 2 metres surely he cant be small for a ruckman??

Perhaps its because he hasn't got a lot of muscle on him yet compared to Preuss who is a behemoth and Maxy who is lean but seriously ripped (both are also nearly 10cm taller)....199cm isnt tall for a ruckman but I'm sure once he fills out, maybe grows a couple more cms he'll look the part of an AFL ruckman.

Stef Martin goes alright as a ruckman who is 199cm.

Yes he does. Hes a physical beast as well would be one of the strongest players in the AFL. Im not saying a short ruckman cant compete its just noticeable at this stage how small Jackson looks compared to established rucks.

All good mate....be very interesting to see exactly what type of player Jackson develops into as he appears to have a unique set of attributes.

Luxury, sheer luxury.

199cm? In my day you'd be lucky if your ruckman was taller than a stunted pygmy!

Is that 5' 6" in the old scale??  (LOL)

Sadly Vagg I was closer to 5' 6" than 199 cm.

So, OD, you're a shorty like me, huh?  (I used to play back pocket on the resting rovers for Sale High Under 16s...!  LOL)

I was only a little tacker in the 60s, but I thought Barry Vagg was a half forward.

Um meaning is changed by the lack of a comma LDC.

How does that work?

LOL.  Aint the English language grand?!!  Yes, the real Vagg played HFF.  As for me (at 5' 6"), I was a BP, except when I was Left Back (left back in the sheds, that is!  LOL)

You're not the real Barry Vagg? How disappointing!

Hey Vagg, even so at Sale High you might have played against some fairly decent players in the inter town competition.

Did you ever have to pick up Jeff Jennngs who played I believe in Traralgon HS side. I assume you didn't play on Templeton or Quinlan or Blethyn who are just a few of the kids who played through those representative sides. I remember Sale an Marra had som pretty useful players not to mention the Moe boys who I can't remember. A lot of speedy players came out of those forward pockets I couldn't even feature in the back pocket"too small, too slow" so took up baseball. I respect your contribution.

Hi DP.  No, I was pretty useless.  Got a game for a single year with the HS U16s, basically to make up numbers!  But, yes, some useful players came out of Sale over the years, including, to name a few, Robbie Foster, John Townsend, Neil Bristow, Ian Collins,  Alan Morrow, Ray Stamp &  Trevor Zeltner.  And, of course, the great Don Williams spent a couple of years away from MFC as Capt/Coach of Sale..

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
