Seems pretty clear now that he's just out of form and not actually carrying an injury. Hopefully the GC game has given him some more confidence.

Interestingly he also mentioned that Weiderman sustained an injury in previous round for Casey. I'm guessing this means he won't be an in v West Coast.

He might not be carrying a defined injury but he still looks limited in his movement. Bending down to pick up the ball seems like a real task for him. Looks stiff to me. I think he's always been pretty limited in his agility and movement but he just looks not quite right to me at the moment. Thought he put himself in the right positions to mark and win the ball on the weekend but wasn't very effective when he did get it overall.

That was noted last week by Goodwin hence why he didn't play for Casey or seniors on the weekend. It doesn't sound like anything serious. I think it was more a give him the week off type injury.

Agree

Looks like a back injury from a distance, can’t jump, not attacking the ball on the ground and lacks “turn”

Possibly still recovering from preseason major ankle surgery & problems with knee ? Like many of our players he is having his preseason in the season

Said "i thought i've had a good pre-season and it was the first time in 3 years i haven't had a major surgery".

Not a niggle or injury issue according to Tom.  Just form.  Feels like he's just starting to get his mojo back now though.

I simply don't believe it is only form. if not injury then must be fitness.

He is not moving any where near as quickly or as freely as last year. As a number of posters have pointed out can barely pick the ball off the ground and has a turning circle of an ocean liner. Isn't attacking the ball in the same was he was last year either.

Can only go on what he said in the interview Bin.

He did mention he's been pushing hard to improve on last year's performance including hard on weights.  Maybe an extra kilo or two in muscle has slowed him down a tad.  Who knows.

I guess so.

If it is only form that is one hell off a form drop.

He dos look like he is getting closer to some good form though. Took a couple of nice contested marks against the Suns.

Believe he started to find a bit in the 2nd half vs the Hawks Bin.  His form might be partly delivery based but isn't clunking as many either compared to last season so far.

Mi50 averages  2018 ? 2.88   vs   2019 ?  1.38   ? 52%

Possibly the fact he is getting the opps best defender this season vs the 2nd string (most of the time?) in 2018 courtesy of Hogan.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
