I think that at some stage the club regarded Preuss as a tall forward/rucking option but that idea seems to have been shelved.

Not sure about that...he is a good long kick and may show up from 50metre mark next year.

Lynch is 199 cm (he's huge), Gunston 193 cm.

Fritsch is 188 cm. But agree with you that he plays tall.

Wrong Lynch 'bingers'...the Adelaide variety.

...and whilst I understand Gunston's height he doesn't play as a tall pack crasher & take a lot of big pack marks. He's more an accumulator who relies on a great kick.

...Fritsch probably plays taller than both although he is not as tall physically.

The only quality forward available in this trade period was Elliot.

He chose not to come.

Others like Jenkins, Bruce etc would not have added anything and weren't worth pursuing.

They could indeed have been seen as a backwards step.

I think the club have done all they could to address deficiencies on our list.

Adding run on the wings allows our mids to spend more time forward, it allows Brayshaw to play where he plays his best, it allows Oliver to spend some time forward and develop that side of his game.

We go to the draft and hopefully take 2 quality players who can add more to our forward half and or better delivery inside 50...

So whilst we didn't add any class KPF's to our list non were available.

We go in looking for improvement in Tmac, Weid, Trac, Fritsch forward, game plan, fitness & delivery.

I think many we will be pleasantly surprised, some even eating their words.

If I'm reading this correctly it seems that the concern relates more to what we do if either or both of our main spearheads gets injured again more so than whether we have enough tall targets sans injury.

However, we shouldn't let our fear of the unknown (injury) distract us from the far more important issue of everyone playing and executing their role as instructed. Yes, it's that old chestnut of system versus personnel again and for me it's by far the best contingency for troops that fall during the next campaign.

Having now addressed the issue of outside run we can reasonably expect to see the ball being delivered inside fifty more swiftly and more often, thus allowing our forwards (whoever they are on a given day) better opportunities to lead and mark into space. However the need to either recruit or develop a quality crumbing forward is crucial to having the multi faceted forward line we require for the coming season.

Not that I have massive hopes for this, but I believe they’ll try Joel Smith in that 3rd tall position as he’s very agile and a strong mark. We saw it in the JLT before injury ruined his season.

I also believe that we think we can get greater goal output from some of our mids. With Tomlinson coming in we have the option of having him take the back up ruck rather than TMac, which robbed us of goal power up forward. And we can also rest Gawn up forward for greater periods of time as a result.

With May and Lever fit, and a tall in Tomlinson on the wing, it makes our reliance on Gawn to plug those holes in the defensive 50 a lot less critical.

People may not rate Tomlinson but I think from a structural point of view he will prove absolutely vital and will free up a lot more options.

It seems to me that this 3rd tall forward to kick 50 goals is a bit of an elusive character.

Are there any decent ones seriously available now that the trades are over?

Only 6 players kicked 50 or more goals in the league.

Another 5 40 plus

Another 18 30 plus

so in all the league only 29 players kicked 30 plus goals for the season.

Tigers had Lynch 63 & Martin 32. Of course Riewoldt missed a lot of games.

Your lucky to get one player kick over 50 let alone 2 in any teams forward line, looking for three is wishful thinking!

TMac needs to find form and we need improvement and players on the park out of

Fritsch

Petracca

Melksham

Weideman

JSmith

and maybe someone to surprise! Maybe more goals from Oliver spending some time forward.

No magic solutions but would be great for us to draft or find out next Jeff Farmer!!

I think we need a first tall in reality we really don't have one at the moment

The FD have bet the house on TMac and Wied coming good.

I hope they are right as we appear to have the same dysfunctional forward set up as last year

This post makes no sense...

I agree we need a first tall.

...but there were none available.

They haven't bet the house but they also can't conjure something up if it's not there.

Maybe Josh Bruce should have been considered as discussed elsewhere

Josh Bruce is pretty 'meh' to me.

He had five games where he went goalless and seven where he kicked just one goal.

His two big games from this year were when he kicked 4 on us (not hard) and 6 against Norf.  Hardly the sort of stats to get excited about.

Josh Bruce is in the same boat as Tommy, not a first tall.

I would have an in form Tommy ahead of him.

You want a 3rd tall to kick 50!

Hogan never kicked 50.

Only TMac in recent times has kicked 50 and we still have him. I think with less injuries next season our forward line will be much better. But dreaming of a 3rd tall to kick 50 is a dream.

So would I !!

Unfortunately we didn't have an in form Tommy this year and there is no guarantee (Given the absence of any plausible excuses)

that we will have an inform Tommy next year.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
