2018 Player Reviews: # 45 Declan Keilty

 DECLAN GETTING CLOSER

Rookie Declan Keilty has been close to selection at Melbourne on a couple of occasions in the past two years but despite some solid displays in defence this year narrowly missed out on one of the more hotly contested key defensive positions, particularly after Jake Lever's injury. He will be back next year as a third year rookie and is likely to get his opportunity in the pre season games.

I don't mind Keilty as a player, but surely he would be a long, long way down the depth chart if you believe the hype about May coming to the club. I struggle to see how our list management has led us to perhaps ending up with 7 key defenders and just 3 key forwards on our list.

But will we have 7key defenders after the trade period?

Interesting year from Dec. He genuinely had a good year at VFL level but couldn't break into the senior line up and it will possibly be harder if we get May at the trade table. Good to see him get another chance as a rookie.

I think Dec has the advantage of not being a 'one trick pony'.  I'm sure I've seen / read that he has gone forward on occasions and taken a telling mark or kicked a crucial goal.  Goody likes flexibility in players.

With all these added key defenders and the loss of Hogan I would bet good money on Dec being swung as a Forward next year.

Its his original position and hopefully a few years as a defender will do him a world of good going forward. He can kick straight and the small number of times he played forward this year he was pivotal for Casey.

I like that idea drunkn, was Dec elevated to senior list or retained as rookie ?

Retained as a rookie as per the AFL.com.au article that came out today

Will Maynard and T.Smith be promoted? Congrats on Dec being given the chance as a 3rd year rookie.

Yes I'm keen to see Dec train with the forwards, he has got some form there at VFL level and tall depth forward is thin whereas tall depth back is deep and he's a long way back in the pecking order.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
