Roosy put it bluntly side can’t handle the pressure & so many  missed opportunities of forward entries.

Should be top 4! instead will be lucky to play finals ... if they miss this should be plastered on the walls of the club rooms for the players to see each & every day!

    Same games total scoring shots for vs against.

    Melbourne Scoring shots: 132
    Opposition Scoring shots: 118

    Only one game the opposition had more scoring shots (Saints, 2 extra shots), and Port in rnd 14 we had the same number of shots. This has been the year of missed chances, and ultimate frustration for the fans.

    Telling numbers point to that they don’t play both ways hard enough with defensive pressure & a efficiency within the forward line.. Wow to miss finals with such high % will be s sickening feeling

    Well, it is the MFC. They always defy the odds by finding incomprehensible new ways to break supporters' hearts.

    It will be a fitting final chapter to our [censored]-weak 2018 campaign; a companion piece to ripping out our hearts last year by missing finals by 0.2%. This year we'll enjoy the indignity of having the highest percentage of any team in AFL history to miss finals.

    The script of heartbreak & failures & owning records which label our club with a negative feel just continues... longest premiership drought, highest losing gf loss 96 points ( though port are now) the cats 186 fiasco , missing the 8 by lowest % , highest inside 50s & still miss the 8 this year

    Sorry can’t help myself yet our club finds a way!

    There is a mental weakness that is ingrained over 5 decades of miserable failure that we just cannot seem to shake.

    Seems that no player or coach, either home grown or imported, has been able to lift the team into the realm of relevance.

     

    I am expecting a gallant loss to the Eagles this week, followed by a hammering at the hands of GWS in the last round.

    Then its the standard 2 months of anger before looking to the trade/draft period yet again for hope.

     

    The embarrassment of following this club continues for yet another year.

    I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the content with the topic of this thread.

    As goody said, we are so close.

    once upon a time there was a team who kept finishing 9th. Then they would make the elimination finals, but find ways to lose. They were ridiculed by the football community after 30 add years of non-performance, the board was being challenged and the coach was going to be sacked.

    a sulking full forward, a full back with questionable disposal, a captain who would kick backwards and sideways were their best players. Suddenly a tubby early draft pick became the best player in the league, the rest matured and became greats, some good trades and complete buy-in from the list around a game plan that suited them and they look world beaters surrounded by a sea of mediocrity.

    our young players are going to grow up playing finals. Once they are 25+ year olds we have our chance.

     Interesting that 7 of our losses to the top teams have happened on the MCG. Maybe the problem is not the who but the where.

    That is telling reading. I hope it gives ol mate nightmares. Probably not though.

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
