He should have just hung onto it rather than handball it once he was over the line. Made it look worse.

Sadly that is true.  There is too much advantage  when tackled in just going to ground and hanging onto the ball to avoid a free for DOB or a illegal disposal away form the boundary.   As well as Frisch's case, the other example is a player tackled and stays standing up and after a while the ball spills to the ground.  This is often paid as illegal disposal even if the ball is knocked out, but if the same thing happens lying on the ground it is ball up.   Not sure there is a way of fixing the rules/interpretation for that, but players should be instructed to go to ground and roll over the line when tackled near the boundary, particularly on the backline.

I sometimes listen to the podcast of oppo teams the week before and after we play them. Yeah, tragic.

One of the podcasters on the Crowcast (http://www.aflcrowcast.com/) made a very accute prediction as to how the game would pan out in the week leading up:

“Melbourne are a team that the way they go about their scoring is in clusters. They tend to go on five or six goal rolls and break teams with fifteen to twenty minutes of football. I’m just not sure that our defence at the moment is organised enough to withstand that kind of a surge which will inevitably come, and regardless of the midfield battle they will win their share of ball. That’s just an outcome that’s going to occur regardless of how well we play. They will win their fair share of ball and at some point, they are good enough that there will be a surge and I just have a bad feeling that surge will produce five, six, seven goals. Whether it be the second quarter or third quarter, that will put a dent in the game.”

We have built ourselves a reputation for these types of surges in games but I found the accuracy of this prediction from an opposition supporter (in another state no less) fascinating.

They also thought Gawn would play a critical role and raved about his rucking in the post match talking about what a privilege it was to see him live. Worth a listen if you have way too much time on your hands.

A 15 goal dismantling of an opponent is one thing but to concede a 20 point start then knock them over on their own dung hill was the icing on the cake, especially with that knobb head Walker in the team and contributing next to nothing.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
