Gawn vs The World

Featured Replies

AA ruckman.

Don't give me that Brodie Grundy crap.  Though I dont mind if they stick him on the bench.

If only we could take advantage of Gawn's hit-outs to advantage. Last week was deplorable in that regard.

Ryder is a good ruck too. His season stats would look better but for injury.

Good teams bounce back.

Good players respond positively to criticism.

Big game next week.

Games having another good year. We just need to make sure we make the most of his dominance around the ball.

I expect him to be AA ruck this year, tracking really well is big Maxy!

His dominance has been obvious.  The umpires treatment of him in favour of Grundy on Monday was a big part of why we struggled.

1st, Grundy initiated a lot of grappling, with the free typically paid against Gawn (Grundy 5 frees for, 1 against, Gawn 1 free for, 4 against).

2nd, regularly the umpires "threw the ball up quick" even though Gawn (our ruck) was the last to get up from the pack i.e. they were throwing the ball up before Gawn had stood up which meant he was at a disadvantage positionally.

Personally, I believe these two issues contributed to Collingwoods dominance at first possession and clearances.

That and they were tackling our inside mids before they got to the ball.

Deserves AA, but TBH so does Grundy. Would be comfortable with both being selected.

If we don't make the finals, though, I doubt Gawn will make it.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
