The thought of Jakovich, Jurrah, Farmer, Flash, Ox, and Robbo in the forward line......?

I do remember a Jakovich, Lyon, Pike and I think Sean Charles forward line!

Someone didnt see Jakovich play

Jakovich was a freak in the short time he was with the Dees but I think Oliver is better than him.

Oliver is probably the best midfielder we have had in my time.

I've gone more for longevity than freakish ability it's why Jurrah also isn't in my side.

Werridee's obsession with creating teams is terrific.

I'm looking forward to these teams in the near future:

- Best team of players whose last names begin before the letter M.

- Best team of players that never played a game of football for the MFC.

- Best team of players that wore a number above #45.

Get to it, Werridee.  We're counting on you.

BEST TEAM OF PLAYERS THAT WORE A NUMBER ABOVE #45

B: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

HB: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

C : JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

HF: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

F: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

FOLL: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

IC: JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH, JURRAH

As you see it's a bit dominated by Jurrah.

That's for you Wiseblood ENJOY!

My team of the 2000s (years as a rough guess, with help from Footywire):

I tried to fit in Terlich but he wasn't good enough.

So the best in my time - period late 70's to Now, (some of the older stuff definitely bears my fathers' influence from when I was a little tacker)

I have linked all the names, MFC has always had the best rucks, Sean O'Dwyer unlucky to miss, and was very torn by Jurrah but he didn't do enough for long enough. Gerard H i couldn't really remember playing, and I tried to pick players who had done it at their besy while at MFC. I have to say FB was the hardest, Jamie Shanahan was a contender, and was tempted to move Wight or Neitz to FB to make room for some of the excellent back pockets we have had. Vince got in for his first season.

It gives me hope that I could see another 6 of our current players making it onto my 'best in my time team'.

Swapping Oliver for Jako wasnt my point.

Jakovich would be one of my first couple of players named, as would Oliver.

Jakovich was not a midfielder - he was a full forward. It is therefore difficult to compare him with Oliver, and possibly inappropriate. For example, before his knee injuries (and he 'came back' to play until retirement), the Ox was a forward and was better than Jakovich but he played at CHF mainly and so, it would not be valid to compare him with the game qualities that Jakovich contributed to the MFC - just as it would be invalid to compare Jakovich as being a CHFwd in the role of the Ox.

It is agreed that freakish ability is the lesser of the comparators in any case.

Longevity added to the contribution and its consistency is the best measure of worth to the Club. Stynes was an example of that aptitude. As was the great Robbie Flower and Neitz. Jakovich could be included categorically.

It is also agreed that Oliver is the most outstanding midfielder we have had but the game has changed so much that this comparison can be rendered meaningless to some: I recall quite vividly how superb Hassa Mann proved to be as a midfielder (centreman) with many more years of impeccable contribution than Oliver has chalked up so far.

With the changes in the game within the modern era, these game changes have enabled Oliver to impart different skills sets to different roles of the midfield, eliminating Hassa from the current perspective yet not detracting from absolutely elite performance criteria.

I wouldn't include any current players (except Jones) as they have not played that long or made it to a Finals Series.
