Aaron Davey and Byron Pickett will be the first Demons to see competitive action in 2007 with the first game less than a month away. The two Dees have been picked to play in the 2007 Indigenous All-Stars team that takes on Essendon at Darwin's TIO Stadium on Friday, February 9. Missing from the team, which will be coached by former Bulldog and Lions player Michael McLean, is Matthew Whelan who has been recovering from an ankle injury.

It's a pity none of the local boys get a game (except White). I would have loved to see Ephrem Tipenwoodi (if thats how you spell it) play.

I hope they can actually play football though. We've used early picks in the past to draft quick players [shane Harvey, Darren Walsh, Jason Winderlich] but those guys have failed to make an impact.

Bachar Houli looks like being one of those freak athletes. According to the Essendon FC website : in early testing he equalled the club record of 2.75 seconds for the 20-metre sprint and then ran 10 minutes 43 seconds in the 3.2km time trial.

His early impressive results also included finishing first in the Jack Clarke Trophy – an inaugural 3km match race against the Geelong Football Club as part of the Ron Clarke Classic.

As I said, I hope these young blokes can get a kick.

All I care about is looking at the injury report the next morning to ensure Davey and Pickett aren't on there.

As one of the chief critics of State of Origin (past use by date) and International Rules (a PR disaster waiting to happen and it did), I am happy to support the celebration of the impact of Aboriginal footballers on Australian football. I welcome their contribution and approach to the game. For the history of derogatory behaviour they have had to endure in the VFL/AFL since Pastor Doug Nicholls and Syd Jackson they have left an indelible mark on AFL and we are all the better for it. From the day that Nicky Winmar proudly lifted his jumper and pointed to the colour of his skin to the faithful of the Filth at Vic Park, there is much to celebrate and honour. I think the Aboriginal All stars game is appropriate but why do they have to play Essendon? I still hope neither Davey or Pickett get injured though.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Essendon got a gig. Unless it's something Sheedy organised. He has been a pretty big supporter of aboriginals in football for years now.

That wasn't real football it was a farce.

There were two teams out there but only one of them was ready to play. The All Stars were far too undermanned in the ruck and key positions. The farcical withdrawls of Adam Goodes, Michael O'Loughlin, Lance Franklin and probably one or two others has effectively killed off what could have been a great concept. Franklin withdrew from the All Stars ostensibly because he had a knee injury but then turned up playing for Hawthorn in a practice match yesterday. Will the AFL take any action over this? It's highly unlikely and that's what makes these games such a joke.

State of Origin football was killed off because the star players from certain clubs didn't want to take part, preferring to look after their own and their clubs' interests. That's fine but they shouldn't then cry over spilt milk when the concept dies an inevitable death whether that be Internationl Rules, All Stars or State of Origin.

I agree it's a disgrace, but then I saw Davey limping off the ground and I cursed the concept to hell. I can't say I blame Hawthorn or Sydney.

And I still think it's not right that Davey, who just last week injured an ankle in training, was given the green light to play. At least Byron, who looks like he is expecting twins anyday now, got some much needed exercise.

Having said that, if the game was a real contest, it would have been worth the heart-attack Davey gave me.

It was an extremely poor spectacle though.
