Do you know what's even bigger than the Big Bash? The AFL.

Why the biggest sporting organisation in the country would look to emulate smaller sporting competitions has me confused.

Let's think now ... why ..... why .....

Could it be the possibility of more $$$$$$$ ?

Interesting that AFL will sting clubs to be in it. What will the AFL do with the extra $$$$$ they hope to generate from it? Give it back to the clubs? Grass roots, country footy, etc? Or bonuses for the execs?

I say....none of this usurping the little greens what,  lets have a 25 a side game of touch Footy all played out on Polo Fields !! Chuckas away eh !!!

That's the gig Gil ;)

What is AFLX?

  • Played on a soccer-sized oval
  • Played between two sides of seven, three on each interchange bench
  • Ten-minute quarters
  • No centre bounces (kick-ins from full-back after each goal)
  • One umpire

Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn said he liked the plan, but hoped he wouldn’t be playing at the launch competition.

"If I’m not playing finals, and Melbourne don’t make finals, it would be a great concept," he said on Thursday night.

"I wouldn’t mind the IPL format, where you can go play for a different team … if you look at the IPL and the Big Bash, the guys love the Vic Bushrangers but some of the guys end up playing for the Queensland Twenty20 team.”

What do you think of this concept?

As Ox said on the run home "Id rather eat Bat Poo"

Whoever thought of this should invent one more "Bright Idea" and retire to a Polo Field !! Shocking concept!

All Commonwealth / Cricket playing countries have ovals available in Winter. Maybe the AFL geniuses should start with them? They also have a sporting link to Oz via cricket... etc.

If the AFL were to offer $500,000 prize money plus low level club support for winners of a domestic AFL footy comp in each of the current Cricket playing nations (i.e. NZ, SA, India, Packistan, England, Ireland, etc...).

Perhaps then the premier clubs or the all-star teams of each nation could then come to Australia in September and play a multi-national competition around the final series.

But no, let's reinvent the wheel...

I'm not sure if all Commonwealth countries have suitable ovals, but I agree with the idea of starting with those that play cricket and must by definition have a "cricket oval". New Zealand is an obvious contender, although Rugby is obviously entrenched. Apparently a new cricket oval is being developed in Auckland which will be big enough for AFL.

Essendon and Adelaide are today talking about hosting a pre-season game in India. And South Africa strikes me as a logical location, too.

AFLX's implementation is further ahead than what it would seem. Check out Gil and his minions modelling the uniforms. Jolly good.2070735.jpg

I'd be very surprised if this gets off the ground.

We’re back! That was fun. The Mighty Dees’ Season 10 campaign is off toa flying start with a commanding 48-point winover the Western Bulldogs, retaining the Hampson-Hardeman Cup in style. After a hard-fought first half in slippery conditions, the Dees came out in the second half and showcased their trademark superior class, piling on four goals in the third termand never looked back.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
