2 first rounders for Lever, you must be joking!

that would be reserved for the absolute best in the comp - Dangerfield types

the way we are recruiting at the moment, every first round selection is a gun

Yep don't think anyone's giving up 2 first rounders for an out of contract player that will name 1 club for his destination.

I feel like that will be our starting offer. I've been saying 1st 2017 and 1st 2018 for a while and I still think it'll end up that, possibly with some swaps of later picks thrown in. Part of the reason for that is that in years gone by, those picks might be in the 1-7 range. Now they'll be pick 10-14ish for the first one, and pick 15-18 for the next. Hardly high on points value. I feel like we might do some dinky thing like take both our first rounders, and we get their 2018 second rounder back. Apparently 2018 runs pretty deep, so to end up with two picks around the 30-36 mark... we might be able to get that kid we've targeted. Or even flip both to move into the early twenties. Keep in mind our list profile now. We have heaps of good players who are in the sweet age spot. We don't have heaps of room.

If you mean because you think we got shafted out of the Kelly deal... no glasses here. Tyson and Salem for Kelly. Loved it. Would do again.

might even get kelly yet?

Should be half of what Geelong gave the Crows for Dangerfield..?

If our first pick this year is pick 12-14 and next year is 14-16, I think we'll definitely have to give up two first rounders.  We don't have prized top 5/10 picks anymore.

Lever is 21.  He's a KPP.  He has 200 games ahead of him and we're supposedly offering to pay him A-Grade / Elite money.

He was pick 14 purely because of his knee and missing the year as an 18 year old, and his value has gone through the roof since then, so he's worth much more than pick 12-14 this year in what is supposedly a weak draft.

He might nominate us, but if he feels as though he owes Adelaide there's also a chance he asks for Adelaide to be well compensated.  Brian Waldron gave that example on SEN yesterday with Aaron Hamill in discussing Josh Kelly's situation and North playing for pick 1.

^ Oath.

I think the majority of demonlanders don't really get how good this bloke is.

He is by far the best young key defender in the game. And he will no doubt reach Rance's level providing he stays injury free.

Please don't provide Oscar/Lever stats, I'll only laugh at them.

How often does selling the future for the next wunderkind work? A first rounder and a swap of later picks or a fringe player that suits their needs is enough. Otherwise we walk and grow our own.

Adelaide know they are going to lose him. They don't hold the whip. They will agree to a good deal with whoever he nominates. It's the new world. We'd do the same, because not doing it will backfire.

Jason Taylor can make any pick look prized.  Pick 12-16 in his hand is like gold.

And how many hammy injuries has Lever had this year, three?   Are they related to his ACL graft?

No way in hell we are giving away two first rounders for him without a sweetener back.

I think the majority would have Lever in a heartbeat, it's just that most are now debating his cost/value. Realistically we can't sell the farm for one player because we're still going to have to pay guys like Tracc, Hogan, Gawn, Salem, the Macs and Oliver either by the end of next year or 2019. So we need ensure that we not only have enough to keep them, but also continue to invest in the future as well.

Hey team - I dont think that you will see us part with 2 first rounders for Lever. Basically, there are a heap of talls in the next 2 drafts in the first round (maybe not as good as Lever) but I cannot see them handing over 2 for him considering what we've seen with Caddy, Prestia, Trealor, Adams, Mitchell, etc. The first rounder and something in the back end. ANB is now too valuable to us, Ben Ken maybe and something like a second rounder (or swap of 2nd and a 3rd). If Lever wants to come to the Dees we shall get it done without selling the farm.

I was thinking about that...

Speaking pure game theory... The rest of the league will be paying a hefty HEFTY price for a first rounder in 2018... But look at our list. We are so stacked. Whatever player we get will find it hard to squeeze in. And to make matters worse a 198cm+ King twin will need 5 years (they always do)... I reckon if you're smart, you get market value for a first rounder next year. Personally, I absolutely do think we need to give two first rounders for two reasons. 1, our picks will be very late first rounders and 2, you need to pay overs to get a kid like Lever.

The key phrase there is market value. I'm all for trading 2018 picks... if we get our due in return. I have Lever that high. What's more, from what I hear, Taylor was all over him like a rash on draft day and has been ever since.

Yep. The Trenners trade might as well have been called the Lever trade. Up until a couple of days before I kept hearing that they were flipping between McCartin and Lever as pick 3 (Trac, Brayshaw, McCartin/Lever) and possibly even Lever over Brayshaw at one stage. To the point that one of his coaches at Caulder thought he was a lock at Melbourne.

I think you are right Dappa, if Lever is on the market, we are going to be up to our eyeballs.

Stop it. STOP IT.

Actually. A few months ago I spoke to his juniors coach at Rovers. A bloke named Tim. Bit of a character, so take it for what it's worth... but the more beer me and my old man plied him with the more gossip he threw our way about the demons. He spoke about Hunt (fast but sprays it), Salem (skilled and good player but lacks ticker for the contest), and Brayshaw (lost count of the amount of times he carried him off the ground with concussions)... At this point I put it to him he likes finding the negative about players. He agreed, and said he does go straight to what can go wrong with them. Old habit of a coach. Then he threw in that they have another kid in the group he said he can't find anything wrong with at all. Kelly.

How crazy is it that all 4 grew up together and now all four are some of the most sought after talent in the AFL.

i don't see why we can't have both kelly and lever. dorks got mitchell and o'meara when it looked like they had little to play with.

What we think is happening vs what is ACTUALLY happening behind the scenes. I really do suspect it's way more game of thrones than any of us ever learn. As such, I have a strong feeling Lever has kept one eye on the demons all along, and has had his manager keeping him in our thoughts since he was a teenager at Romsey. In the last 12 months he's been watching how we play. It's all basically coming together.

As another side note, a guy I used to work with lives in Romsey and knows his family. Says the reports about him are true. You can't find more stand up citizens and strong character than Lever and his family. Appears those reports are true as well.

I was really [censored] we didn't get Prestia as I had him rated really high. Look at all this stuff now.

I think for sure we have to go up and kick the tires.

Problem is what do we have to trade with... and also how much room. I really am comfortable with the list. Mess with it too much and you can break up a good mix.

Second this. All the Under 18 coaches I've spoken to always talk about Lever as one of the most coachable guys they have ever had and what a great bloke he is. I cant remember if he was the one with issues with language or not (I actually think it was Touk Miller who needed to calm down on that...). Anyway, main thing is Lever will be an asset for the dees and would love to see him in Red and Blue.

mahoney and taylor seemt o have a few tricks, so happy to leave it to them. i don't generally like to theorise too much on trade options as there are too many possibilities and invariably i'm way of the mark anyway (as are most)

Still good fun though. Hard as the job is, we don't have to get it right. I like the speculation. And I daresay you're not as far off as you think.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
