The current draft order places Melbourne's  first pick at #26 so I thought that my first highlight player on this board should be the one ranked #26 by Knightmare of Bigfooty and ESPN.

26. Josh Rotham (WA)
Best position: General defence
Height, weight: 192cm, 79kg
Recruited from: West Perth
Plays like: Matthew Broadbent
Projected draft range: first round
Rated last month: 14
Rationale behind ranking/change of ranking: Showing promise with athletic and running ability from the back half but a lack of a clear best position makes him difficult to place.
Strengths:
- Athleticism
- Linebreaking ability
- Acceleration
- Aerial marking
- Intercept marking ability
Weaknesses:
- One-on-one ability
- Ability to negate opponents' influence
- Unclear best position
- Unclear ability to play midfield or forward

A defender with questionable one on one ability?

Methinks this draft is not going to be quite as exciting as past efforts.

Saw this kid live on telly when they played the allies and he was a beauty. Very skinny but he was providing dash and showed courage in the air.

Reminded me alot of Andrew Mackie.

Well unless we trade up with our draft picks then we have no option but to take the best of what's available in the mid twenties. That means players who aren't in fashion or out of left field.

When your 79kg and playing in the KPD then your one-on-one is going to be poor, when he bulks up he will be ok

Actually refreshing to read a draftees weaknesses, rather than listen to guys like Shifter Sheahan make every player sound like the second coming of Chris Judd or Wayne Carey.

Most of his opponents would be of similar size wouldn't they?

Weideman was 94kg last year, as a reference. Only 4 cms taller

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
