Crackers Keenan thinks he's going

Maybe I'm missing something, but didn't he put off contract negotiations so he can focus on his footy and end the media scrutiny??? Seems to be going just swell :)

even if you could read Jesse's mind, and you knew what Freo and other clubs had planned, and you knew how we are going to be looking as a footy club at the end of 2017, and you knew what changes were going to occur in the players' contracts landscape, you STILL couldn't be 100%

but you don't know ANY of those things so you're talking garbage thickblood

Curry.

You are creating an argument over something someone believes will happen.

If someone is religious and 100% believes in God does this mean there actually is one?

Sorry! Couldn't help myself. An old Demonland favourite.... I guess Jesse does have the advantage of not being the dreaded 192cm.

Talk about paranoia lol....

Lets just deal with a bit of common sense, firstly.. Footywriters like Crackers and Langdon unfortunate to themselves just arn't relevant anymore as they've had their time in the sun. They make/say these comments only to be noticed. They make up headlines(its their job unfortunately) with the knowledge its impossible to be called out on B.S.

I honestly believe there's no story here as he's been instructed to just play footy and enjoy.

Remember, this is a completely different club now , massive list turnover, drafted astutely with bucket loads of talent and very good trading.

We are an Elite club now and Jesse will be or come close to being AFL highest paid player when resigns with the Dees.

Jesus, we're really not! We've got a hell of a long way to go before we get there.

Yeah that made me roll my eyes too. We've improved, sure, but that's a hell of a long way from being "elite"

to clarify my opinion.

I agree he doesnt have to sign on 2 years out however the argument he should wait till the CBA is released doesnt hold water. Other players have worked around that by agreeing to percentage of cap based on current negotiations.

Hogan isn't 'other players' - he might be about to sign a 5 year contract that would be entirely, fundamentally different at the end of this year when the CBA is finalised.

The equivalent of $800k a year might be as much as $1.1m next year. Over a 5 year contract he might leave $1.5m on the table.

The cap might go up $3m next year...

He entered negotiations then stopped. I would do the same and i dont blame him but on a spectrum of staying to leaving that move didnt put him closer to staying in my opinion.

With his  interests outside footy, Perth is a very attractive propostiion. ( theres no way to know if thats a issue or not but just putting myself in his shoes. ) Melbournes a great place if you love coffee and restuarants. If you are a keen surfer youd be keen on perth.

Absolutely he was incredibly uncomfortable in that interview the other week when the contract questioning came up. you cant deny how quiet his voice went when he spoke about it and then suddenly was at ease when the line of questioning changed. (again it could just mean he's uncomfortable discussing that topic).

Most of all, I cant see Melbourne improving enough in a short time to have him want to be a part of it. He is a competitive beast but i reckon WC or freo could mount a strong case to him that he could have success over there and still get to be with his mates and family and he could easily be convinced that alongside kennedy with priddis hitting him on the t1ts would be a nice way to earn a dollar.

I have no idea if any of this is correct which is why it is only an opinion but i havent seen anything from him more concrete that makes me think he will stay. If i do then my opinion will change. Its all .

Im sorry if it sounds negative. its purely my summation on events so far. lets hope the season goes well and he will feel he'll miss out on something special if he leaves. Lets not forget how inept as a club MFC wouldve been seen in football players eyes. Yes its turned around but only recently.

I suppose the thing that the Perth clubs would have to consider is does WCE have the cap space to fit him in? and how much are they willing to give up in a trade, i'd say a bloke of Jesses talent is worth a couple of first rounders and a player or something crazy like that, especially if both teams are at the pointy end and the first rounders are only picks 15 or 16 or whatever

The biggest thing with Freo is they have stuff all good young talent coming through, a bunch of ageing stars and can't afford to give up two consecutive first round picks unless they're willing to fall away hard, which Jesse wouldn't be keen on.

and could WCE afford him? and would they be willing to give up say Gaff and a couple of picks, i'd have thought they'd do that deal in a heart beat to pair up Jesse, Kennedy and Darling in the same forward line.

So then why did they open negotiations in the first place?

The point of my post was to respond to those who thought it was "mutual" and the club wouldn't be upset with putting talks on hold. The club would sign him up now for life if they could.

I'm not sure that they did. I understood them to be responding to the club's wishes to negotiate. Once it was realised that the CBA would likely have a big bearing on the agreement it was iced for the time being...I'm only guessing of course but not much point in having conniptions now...

Then why are so many players signing at other clubs?

My guess is that other players aren't looking at the massive payday that Jesse is looking at. And I am not sure it is that many is it?

Steele Sidebottom is the biggest name i can think of who according to reports is getting decent money, not as much as i am assuming Jesse will be asking for, but a good crust none the less.

The club wouldn't want that. They would prefer he get a contract that is huge but easier to manage as time goes on.

If you make a decision that he is worth X under salary cap Y then if salary cap Y rises by 5% for example then his salary would too. The number of players on the list aren't changing so any rise in the salary cap is going to be commensurate to the rise in player salaries.

Do you think if we offered him X and the salary cap increased by 5% his manager wouldn't come back with X+5% anyway? Or are we going to lowball them and say, nup X is our offer?

I think the cap will increase by 30%. Are we happy to make that deal (X+30%) without knowing the full picture? It would mean offering $800k that is automatically $1.1m... Would the other players be happy with that? Would McDonald and Watts not be entitled to that? Jones?

I hope they get the CBA sorted quickly.

$1.1m seems correct. If the salary rises by 30% then salaries across the board should rise by that much. We have to pay a minimum of the cap and have to have ~38 players on the senior list. Do you think we'll keep Hogan at $800k and bump up a couple of others like Watts and TMac to $800k too? So they get a pay rise but Hogan doesn't?

It makes no sense.

The NBA are doing it that way. Salaries that are agreed will not increase with the cap - this is why LeBron James has been signing one year contracts for the last two years so he gets the maximum possible each year (the cap in the NBA is about to jump from $58m to around $91m).

I think the AFL will do something similar to the above.

So that means that I don't think it is wise to have an agreement with 1 player about their salary being a percentage of the cap when other players won't have that luxury.

I also don't think we should be trailblazers by giving all our players a bump if other clubs are not forced to - it will give other teams a competitive advantage over us to suddenly have $3m in cap space.

I love the awkwardness of Pedo on the buzzer. He reminds me of a guy I went to school with who would just wander up to a group of people having a chat and stand there awkwardly. A love between Jesse and Jack, but not so much Pedo.

Makes you wonder where Pedo sits amongst the playing group. Never see him gettibg amonst the banter between the players on social media or any social activities.

Personally see him as bit of a loner but who knows

You can only judge on what you see though.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
