The thread anticipating a thread that Jack Grimes has been named an emergency

I've only read part of this thread because my stomach can only stand so much.

Jack Grimes is one of the gutsiest and committed players to play with the Demons for years. He will come back and be a major part in the Demons future. Some of the posts are disgraceful and ignorant and completely contrary to the way the club rates Grimes. And I have connections within the club, unlike so many flogs posting in this thread.

I hope you are right, Jack is one of the best captains a club could ever wish for. I hope he 100% proves his doubters wrong, kisses that premiership cup in a red & blue jumper.

Is it reasonable to ask a vegetarian to consume cast quantities of animal souls for the sake of the team. I'm big on symbolism and I think Grimes eating a batch of quail during training and at half time would send a clear message to his team mates - it could be our line in the sand moment!

Depends on the size of the cast

Strange then that he was at Casey last weekend!

Grimes to me is made to be a run with midfielder similair to vineys role on Saturday. Was a midfielder as a junior, tough as teak good tackler and good overhead and willing to sacrifice his game.

Dunn was in a similair position and think roos will be supporting and encouraging him. But to me he needs the change in role.

Yes when he was drafted Emma Quayle predicted he would be a reliable midfielder for the next 10 years. Has he ever played for us in the middle for an extended run of games?

Anyone that thinks Grimes is a great captain is still living iin Schwabovia.

I believe that that nation's flag is a picture of a giant whiteboard with a few doodles on it.

To be fair, I think Grimes had some attributes of a good captain. When he was appointed captain though, the club as Mick Malthouse and Neeld, in a rare moment of lucidity, said was about everything but football. Sure, he was a great role model on the track and, from what I can tell, wasn't a party animal like the Cols and Beamers of this world. Plus he was fairly well spoken though I used to hate it when they made him front up to another presser to profusely apologize for yet another shizen performance.

Sad thing is if you are captain, you need to deliver on the field and Jack hasn't done that consistently enough. It has also been said here ad nauseum but his decision making didn't help matters. If Jimmy Toumpas arses up, then the players will drop their heads. If your captain turns the ball over like that, which Jack did too often sadly, then multiply the sense of accompanying demoralization by at least 3.

He tried but he failed. Big issue now is to get his game back in order. A telling fact is that he was not missed last weekend. He hasn't progressed in the past 3 seasons. Neville Jetta is now doing his onfield role but a whole lot better.

I know but I think there should be some acknowledgement that he did and does have some good qualities to be captain. I agree that the overall experiment was a failure. If both Trenners and Grimes were handled properly and given the captaincy after both had played at least 100 games, I don't think this conversation would be being had.

But yes, I agree with most of what you have said.

Nathan Jones has the correct attributes. Now when you see that photo of all the club captains together, ours doesn't look out of place.

Have heard from a close source to jack grimes that he and roos don't see eye to eye and wouldn't be suprised if he is moved on at seasons end

^^

What could we get for grimes? An early 2nd rounder, or a young player from a developing club?

3rd rounder at best unless he shows a lot more form for the rest of the year. He's at Casey for a reason and any team would see his tapes and work it out. You can get a young player from any club for him, but it might not be a good one.

It's a long season. Let's not worry about trading him due to a rumour.

Roos stuck loyal through some terrible games from Grimes last year. No coaching manual dictates your half back turn it over by foot, dish off hospital passes and not win nearly enough intercept possessions. That said a more free flowing team might suit Grimes better than a regimented defensive team with controlled ball movement.

I'm glad he found lots of it at Casey today. 30 chances to practice using it well under game pressure. Which is 2 or 3 weeks worth at AFL level. Probably plenty of chances for intercept marks, spoiling opponents etc. If Howe's still sore he'd be a chance to come back in, although for his sake I think a longer spell at Casey against some more competitive VFL teams would be better for him.

What, Grimes thinks he can kick and Roos doesn't?

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
