I saw the comparisons last year and was hounded whenever I brought it up. Spencer has something Melbourne ruckman have lacked for a while, and that's a real eye for the contest, a great urgency to tackle (and hold a tackle) and a surprisingly long sprint (not that quick off the mark but he can pick up speed very quickly).

IMO he should play as many games as possible this year. No point having him go back to the VFL even with Jamar in. Once he hits 50 games he'll hit his strides.

I was thinking at the weekend of Spencil more along the lines of Strawbs, and the combo (when/if ever fit) with Gawnius Maximus akin to the Jimma / Strawbs pairing.

Spencil is certainly more the strong bash and crash Strawb type without the fine skills or unprecedented endurance* of Jimma.

*a level of endurance only approached in my memory by Graham Wise, who for those who don't remember was our last premiership ruckman, a man who rucked solo all day without relief, and was also a marathon runner.

i think Jamar will come in for a few games now & then, to rest the lad, this year. we want cranky Franky to play & learn, but we don't want to drive a truck over him.

On Sunday, my wife noted, during the singing of the song, that Jake looked a bit like Jimmy. It caused my beer to become agitated to the point where I needed to put it down. I wasn't sure if I was shaking from laughter or from shock.

I suppose there is some sort of resemblance in terms of physical appearance but this is where the similarity begins and ends.

Jake was good on Sunday but I don't see him as a Brownlow medalist any time in the next decade.

Very True... but good golly... its like watching a reincarnation of one Uncoordinated Strawbs O'Dwyer with Spencer....

Spencer is one of the only ruckman who can play out 3 and a bit quarters in the ruck by himself, his input around the ground needs to increase, but around the stoppages he is a beast. His second efforts have always been his strong point and he is no doubt going to benefit from prolonged time in the number 1 ruck spot. I think Jamar will ad much more hit outs to advantage against the bigger ruckmen due to his experience, but the pressure around the ground andthe fact that Spencer is willing to lay a tackle and chase is his biggest attribute and one which cannot be underestimated. having a 100 kilo 203 cm bloke who is chasing the smaller players around and plays with aggression is something the team really needs (even if his disposal and marking is questionable at the moment)

Jack's input around the ground is already far greater than Jamar's (except maybe in his AA year). MJ has done next to nothing in 2011-13 around the ground. Very few marks, very few shepherds or tackles: JS on the other hand gets to contests and throws his considerable weight around. And you mention MJ and hit outs to advantage! Other than a purple (being by the way red and blue) patch linked with Moloney, a small percentage of his hit outs have been to advantage.

He gets a lot of unwarranted criticism. I think he's developed into a decent ruckman. His tapwork, endurance and hardness have definitely improved, his kicking slightly too. To see him be in so many contests V Carlton was impressive. Jamar would've done better v Mumford against GWS, but then again it's hard to know if Jamar's up to it this season. He's not consistent yet, but Spencer's played some decent games in the past year. It's definitely make or break for Spence, I mean it's quite impressive he's even made it through the sackings and the rebuilds. Inexperience can't be an excuse now though since it's his 6th year and he's 24 (but he's never played more than 8 games in a season)

Jake will do less of the bad things and more of the good rings as he progresses, but at this stage I'd give it anther season before I compared him to any other ruck man.

Agree. He's got rare qualities, being aggression and speed. Once his confidence and comfort with the game has fully developed, he's going to be very valuable I reckon. If Max Gawn becomes everything he has promised also, that's a mighty fine ruck duo.
