One of the most improved Demons of 2013, the tall forward/ruckman was particularly dangerous around goal at times.

Showed why he was highly rated back in his junior days. Tall super quick forwards dont grow on trees and we are blessed to have him in our side. Roos rates him highly and i cannot wait to see him take his game to the next level with more confidence and development.

People have forgotten Fitzy has beaten the odds to play AFL footy and contribute like he did this year CFS and then diabetes nearly haulted his career. This guy has some serious determination and courage.

I sti shake my head at people that still want to trade him after what he showed this year.

Very well said. It's hard to think of a really tall player with equal foot speed. For someone of his height he appears to have quite a low centre of gravity, perhaps the corollary of a long neck? . He can pinch-hit in the ruck, too, if injury strikes the other three. Probably a bit more than pinch-hit.

Can't wait till he takes a hanger over Gawn will be mark of the year!

If that is Fitz over say Sandilands then it is a definite hands in the back. Going to be at least two movements as well.

If however that is Gawn with his face in the turf (and it is difficult to tell from that angle) then I just don't know if it is a free, a mark or play on?

Quite the improved player, especially from where some of us considered him to be at seasons start. I do however wonder just how and where he can break into the team.

YD you've done it again

That is an amazing picture (cant believe its a photo)

could be shown to all players as an updated example of the little engine that could.

Just hope can survive the landing

I was very pleasantly surprised when i first saw him by his athleticism for such a big guy.

Really looking forward to what Roos can do with him.

Fitzy is a keeper for mine

Tall , Quick and Agile

A defenders nightmare IMO

where do you play him and is he in the starting 22 ?? 25 ? even .. just asking

Forward pocket and yes i think he is in our best 22

Stoppage Ruckman in the forward 50

Many have stated that we already have too many talls in the Forward line

Hogan is touted as a KPF but IMO he could become a CHB under Roos

Clark is a permanent FF and should never be used as a Ruck Option

Dawes has the ability to play CHF just like Hogan

Howe at HFF

The other HFF? maybe Kent ?

Watts in the Centre

We have no damaging small forward ..........Evans maybe ? Trade for one ?

Thats my thoughts on it but with Roos who knows

When its all said and done the Forward Line isnt really the problem at Melbourne

How about the wing or HFF.

in place of .. ??

Starts making the forward 50 very VERY tall, not so flexible. Its a reasonable answer though. Not my choice ...but

If we can get them all on the park at the one time with some clear plans and strategies for the team to play too we should be a problem for any team to match up.

Clarke at FF leads strongly and makes space as an agile forward option

Howe deep in forward pocket I know he is agile and mobile but his marking sets him aside as a deep marking option

Dawes and Hogan as twin post HFF with one going to boundary and one at CHF DAwes plays defensively and from what Ive seen of Hogan on few televised games he also was defensive

These blokes all make space and are all agile but still leaves a spot for a couple of smaller crumbers rotating through the centre and adding to mid field pressure

Again good defensive structures and player use can mean that mids dont have to expend energy running deep and can set up short defensive zone to assist our very solid and reliable defense which has been forced to do too much defending

As most posters acknowledge we need mids to pump the ball into a very talented forward line

Watts has shown he can be both defensive and offensive and with his delivery skills could feed any of the above options while playing a significant link on the wing Toumpas who plays taller than he seems can do the same on the other wing

Im excited to see who we add to the list and how Roos uses the talent we have and the supporting cast we have Kent Clisby Terlich Trengove etc

I reckon its a great squad with plenty of options getting them confident and playing to their ability is the trick Im looking forward to

GO DEEES

Sorry got carried away and diverted in the last post

Fitzzy can back up any of the structure being both a marking and agile forward but can add to the flanker winger link role as when I have seen him he seems to have the capacity to cover ground and make space.

If the above forward mid structure is on the ground Fitzy may find he is matched with a lower order defender which would give hima great advantage

He may need to work on his delivery as it would be disapointing if he failed to score from a positive attack

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
