Casey Scorpions v Werribee Tigers - VFL First Semi Final

Featured Replies

Free kick to Werribee gives them a goal late in the term. Deficit is 31 points at Three Quarter Time: Werribee 15.5.95 to Casey 9.10.64.

Goals: Smith 4 Best Gillies Lindsay Taggert

Couch pushed in the back in the goal square. No free. It's not Casey's day as Bail gets a high tack and again no free. Werribee move it forward and score a point to go to a 33 point lead.

Maxy Gawn makes it a certainty by kicking into the hands of a waiting opponent who runs in to make it a 38 point lead to Werribee. The sign of a tired player.

One wonders what might have been had Jake Spencer been available.

Big Maxy still has a hell of a lot to learn...

Don't know that this loss is about one or two unavailable Melbourne players.

One also wonders what might have been had Jesse Hogan been available because Werribee is marking everything in defence and when Maxy finally takes one, he's tackled and its holding the ball. Scorps trail by 40 points as we approach 18 minutes. Magner gets flattened and goals!

So disappointed for the boys. It makes you lament the 2 point loss to the hawks a couple of weeks ago, could have been a series changer.

Interesting stats with Couch and Magner getting lots of it but only one other player getting above 18. It seems similar to the problem Melbourne has with ball winning.

Speaking of ball winning, watching the WAFL, the mighty black ducks have their noses in front against the royals. Old dee's pal Jamie Bennell is dong his usual effort (has he touched it?) and Morton and PJ are playing for the enemy!

Quite unbelievable, really.

I think that makes it four consecutive years of finishing top 4 but losing two straight finals to be knocked out in straight sets. I think that also makes it three consecutive years where Werribee has beaten Casey in the semi final.

That must mean Casey's lost 8 consecutive finals.

Tough stuff for the Casey players.

Four years that the MFC have done Casey over.

I feel sorry for Casey

From the statts Garlett does not look like he has been more than poor .

What's the news?

mate all available players played as far as I can tell with perhaps the exception of Clisby (unsure went he was out). No one was sent off for surgery unless their season was over anyway.

I thought we could have made a couple extra available to qualify but Melbourne selection cones first for Melbourne players. If we'd have dropped players to be qualified we'd have been crucified in the media and by everyone else.

Does this work?

All the players we want to keep ( including Clisby) were sent on leave so that they can start pre-season on the earliest possible date

We left Casey with the players we intend to de-list......................

Gawn is being delisted?

Crap result for the casey boys. So keen to see finals progress but again we fall. Really need the demons still playing this time of year so all players are trying to win vfl and push for afl selection.

Interested to see roos impact at casey.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
