If we took Dunstan at pick 9 the entire footy world would have thought Pendo was back,

i'm happy to say i think Salem will be a better player very quickly, but that's just my opinion

One main reason which I am not big on spending 4+ years on development is because players can get up and leave after 8. We may as well get 8 solid years out of players rather then 4 development uears and 4 exceptional years only to have the player poached.

Loved Luke Dunstan right from the start. I do wish we had picked him up but I am just as happy with Salem.

Watts is a good example, took him until his 6th season for it to click. 5 years of development and he is free to walk at end of his current contract.

Trengove is in his 5th year.

And this attitude will keep us a cellar dweller for years to come. We will lose players - all clubs do. But you have got to back this new regime in to bring stability and success and a culture of players wanting to stick around to taste success.( please lord, be in my lifetime). You draft players who you consider the best pick for the club over an extended period. Just because one pick is ready to go right now as opposed to another requiring a year or two to develop should not cloud your thinking. And the thought of losing a player after 8 years !!

For once you've posted something worth thinking about. But I think the evidence doesn't back up the argument. Since free agency came in how many players who were able to leave actually did so? If there was mass movement of players under free agency, I think your point has some validity. Perhaps that will happen in the future, but right now with most players choosing to remain with their club, I think your concern is unfounded.

And Rhys Palmer won the rising star in his first year. The only point you are making is some players take longer to develop than others - some skyrocket early and fizzle out or never develop further and yes, some players that are project players that will require time to develop never develop at all.

To base a recruiting strategy on not picking players that require some time is flawed in the extreme - in general you would then never pick a ruckman or big KP as they take more time to mature ( there are exceptions)

Why is everyone comparing a kid who has played ONE game of football to a kid who hasn't had a run yet and screaming that we made the wrong choice? How the hell would anyone know anything yet?

Surely this is a conversation that can wait till both kids have 70-80 games under their belt
