G. LYON - FOOTY CLASSIFIED

Featured Replies

Garry said he doesn't have the time to get involved. What does he do besides the Classifieds, The Footy Show and Triple M footy? Count his money?

A pretty easy gig I would have thought. I would imagine he has plenty of time on his hands.

He also has no footy commitments from Oct to the start of the each season either.

The real issue is he has no interest in doing it.

His words

I'm not quite sure what people expect of him

As far as I know he's had 3 jobs in his life

Office boy at the AFL, footballer & media presenter (from a young age)

None of which qualify him as a CEO or Club President. As someone pointed out earlier, President ain't just a ceremonial role

He's said before he doesn't believe he has the skill set or personality to be an effective administrator

The Clint Eastwood Rule is at play here & he's called it on himself

Those seeking the Messiah should look elsewhere

I can only think of Grimes (for grit) and Howe (running ability) as possible close-down-Watson options. Anyone else got any clues?

Didnt Dunn take him sucessfully last year I seem to remember he had a quiet game

Doesn't take talent to pick a player and stay close to them. In the vision they showed NO ONE was within 5 meters of him.

Seriously ?

Just wow...

It was reaaaaally ordinary. Pretty much all the examples were stoppages, no one manning up the current brownlow champ... Weak.

H-T on the show last they mentioned that when he came in as interim footy manager for a coupe of months he had done a review of the footy department. I had forgotten about that. It occurred to me that if he had been thorough in that he would have spoken to the players. If he did surely any one being honest would have brought up any issues they had with the admin team and CS in particular.

I would love Hutchy or Caro to ask him about this.

That is patently obvious HT, but he is a media performer after all. Given his chosen career path he should make editorial comment without fear or favour. Once again, my view is he added nothing of substance to the debate last night, other than saying he could not get involved, doesn't want to get involved and it is time for someone else to do something.

binman - had he been thorough enough when he put his hand up, R.Lyon may well have been our coach given Grant Thomas' tweet yesterday: -

"I can say with some authority that Roos (Paul Roos) contacted G Lyon & informed him R Lyon was available (would hav stayed in Melb). Alas no follow up!"

It confirms comments on here over a year ago that he didn't have to go through his manager. And it confirms publicly G Lyon wasn't thorough enough in the best interests of the Mfc.

Particularly when the club stated publicly they were looking for an experienced coach to replace the vacated seat when they sacked Bailey.

Iva, he doesn't want to roll his sleeves up, he's stated someone else can get involved.

I have no problem with that HT, but when it suits him, behind the scenes, he still puts his 2 bobs worth in.

I just wish G Lyon wasnt seen as some sort of quasi MFC official

If he doesnt want to be in volved dont ask him to pick coaches or be on selection panels

Gary, If you are asked either do the whole job and take responsibility for your input or say no mean it and [censored] off

TV examples pfft- being at the game I make a few comments.

1. If our ruckman gets first hand to the ball then it makes it a lot more difficult for the likes of Watson to get a clearance - but Jamar was outjumped pointlessly the whole night

2. Even if Jamar halves the tap outs then it makes it a little more difficult to get as cut up as we did - but Jamar could not even negate their ruckman

3. If the centre runners get the service from Essendon ruckman like Watson did you are going to get chopped up every day of the week

4. Watson ( and Ablett and Swan and others) make chumps out taggers most weeks - he won a brownlow for a very good reason

5. Top that off with our best tagger out and the above and you are going to get caned out of the centre.

We were truly horrible all over the field and didnt get a clearance all night but i would prefer to point the finger at footballers who couldnt even get near 50/50 contests as opposed to a midfield who was up against it straight after the ball was bounced because of our non existant ruckman - i do not think i have ever seen Jamar so completely thrashed.

This.

Maybe he is staying out?

I don't have the animosity some do toward Lyon, although I understand why he is seen as someone who has an enormous influence without the responsibility.

I saw him as a cheap and loyal consultant on important matters and that the decisions he helped make are the responsibility of those that called him in to help them make those decisions.

Which is why I would love to get a CEO that the board is unfamilar with and a President confident enough to have enough football people on the board to help make these decisions in conjunction with the CEO.

I agree on Jamar, been horrible for a while...

BUT

If we can't organise someone, ANYONE to be standing next to the reigning Brownlow medalist at stoppages, then we are truly a mess, just standing with him, I know he's hard to stop.

Maybe he doesn't want to come because he knows there are so many people ready to tear him down no matter what, because they don't like him at a personal level at the same time as they think he ought to do more. If he stays out, he'll be slack, if he steps in, he'll be arrogant and quickly become a 'divisive figure'.

Having said that, I do quite firmly recognise he's been a bit weak for a long time. A lot of the dislike is his own fault for staying involved, pulling strings, expecting people to respond to his 'suggestions', but never actually committing to a responsible position.

Regardless, the fact is it simply wouldn't work for Lyon to be president, footy director, or any similar role at this time. Just wish he'd harden up a little in his media roles and not let people get away with cheap and inaccurate shots at the club, while he is sitting right there.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
