Can Melbourne win a premiership with its current list?

Featured Replies

Hi Old Dee

totally agree as to why we've been toilet water, my comment about supporters was referencing all the drivel (IMHO) I have heard about players from supporters of all clubs, and that I don't think the MFC is particularly afflicted with daft supporters beyond the standard mean.

I would say that 'the same passion created by five years in the bottom 6 with two last finishes.' has revealed a surprising level of stoicism and a justified level of cynicism amongst our supporters.

That said, I'm on my second marriage, so am a proven optimist, and can add myself to the daft supporter list.

Cheers

and Tom Hawkins took how long ? He doesn't get forever, I'd agree with that, but some just take that little longer, I wish he was tearing it apart but the coach is prepared to stick with him I will too for another season.

All supporters are ordinary judges of footballers, it's the passion that gets in the way of the judgement, live with it.

Likw what you said - but footy isn't rocket science

I don't expect J Watts to be a match winner every game - I would like to see some consistancy from him, i think if he can develop that this year he's got a shot at being a pretty handy player.

If not......... you''d have to agree it's been a fairly poor no.1.

2013/14 was supposed to be our "window". We'd taken Watts, Trengrove, Skully all now 50+ games. Morton, Petterd, Martyn, BAte etc over 80. We'd recruited Moloney from Geelong, Rivers was our Rising Star and Sylvia (and McLean) were top 5 picks destined to hold the cup aloft. Jurrah was destined to kick 50-70 goals a year

ONLY 3 ARE LEFT!!!!!

That's why we are back at bloody ground zero again. And posters here are already talking of Viney/Tompas/Hogan as stars when none of them have even played a game yet.

I think we'll look back on 2007-2011 as the greatest wasted opportunity in this clubs history and be amazed that we got some things so right (debt reduction, finance, move to AAMI stadium) and some things so horribly wrong - recruitment.

So in a nutshell: no

That covers it fairly well demon25

You did forget tanking that we did not do

Hawkins is one example, but hardly the norm. If you're hanging on for Watts to do a Hawkins you're clutching at straws. It hardly follows that Watts will suddenly take his pathway, especially when they're very different players. And courage wasn't Hawkins' problem. His problem was belief. Watts doesn't believe either. For good reason. Timidity stifles every part of his game, which is a far bigger issue to overcome.

I'm not sure just how old a bastard you are OD. But whenever these look back or look forward threads come up I get more and more depressed. Will the likes of you and I ever see a premiership?

bookmark the thread, if he doesn't turn it on this year you can serve a big dose of 'i told you so' and i'll cop it sweet. That said I'm not sure it makes a difference what the problem is, just whether he can get past it. I think your right that he's a bit timid, I just think if he still has the support of the coach then we might see this change.

As for the list, if Sydney can do it we can too, (and I would vote for Neeld to be on the banner forever if that happens).

Not as old as some may think.

Age is a relative thing mate.

I went to my first GF in 1960 as a boy.

Does that give you a clue?

Will we see another flag in our time?

I sincerely doubt it Bbo.

In fact I don't expect to now.

I will be happy for us to be a regular finals team and a powerful club.

For the last few years we have been irrelevant.

I would love us to rise above that so I can go to the football and expect to win 90% of the time.

That is the best I can imagine.

Imagine this my friend.

2016, last Saturday in September, MCG Members wing, Watts gets the ball in front of the interchange bench, 30 seconds to go Demons down by 5, baulk, turn, run into space, one bounce, two bounces, inside 50, the kick sails through, ball taken back to the centre, the siren sounds, Collingwood lose by a point!

GO DEES!

Imagine this my friend.

I will print that and read it in bed tonight.

Oh the joy!

Keep on dreaming! Sadly Collingwood will be on the bottom of the ladder by then due to a poor culture (too much success) and we will most likely by versing GWS and the margin will probably by like 20 goals!! (10 of those from Clarke, the other 10 from Hogan)

We must be about he same era OD.

I went to my first GF in 1959 that I remember.

Dad said I also went to 56, but I must admit I don't recall it.

I probably spent most of the time collecting bottles to get the 2d refund.

2015 - The AFL take away Collingwood's regular ANZAC day fixture and replace it with an automatic spot in the Grand Final each year. This comes about as the result of Eddie having replaced Andrew Demetriou as CEO of the AFL. "It's only fair that other teams get the chance to play on ANZAC day" says Eddie at a packed press conference.

I like your work, Crawf52, but I know you can do better than that.

How about on ANZAC Day in 2015, the Dees take on Essendon, who are still distracted by the never-ending investigation into peptide use. After Melbourne win by 20 goals, ASADA announce that they are broadening the enquiry to include Collingwood and the AFL itself, and, as an interim measure, suspend the entire AFL executive, including Eddie himself. Eddie froths at the mouth, and threatens to walk away from the game if he is not re-instated immediately. Faced with an offer too good to refuse, the rest of the football community accept Eddie's offer, and he disappears forever to become the eternal president of Newcastle in the English Premier League. Three weeks later, ASADA announce that as a result of the enquiry, both Essendon and Collingwood are to lose all premiership points for the years 2012-2015, and for the next three years as well, for good measure. This means there is a total of 7 wooden spoons to be split between the two clubs. The decision is made by a coin toss, and the opportunity to do so is auctioned off to the public, with the MFC being the beneficiary (as compensation for being the last club to play Essendon). This raises approximately $100 million, which propels the Dees to the top of the rich clubs table. Essendon trade out all of their players at the end of season, bring in an entirely new list, and then get done for tanking. Collingwood get fined $1 billion, which means they are eternally in debt, and can't afford to pay their players, who have to work for a living while training. Consequently Collingwood get thrashed every game for several decades ...

if we are going to dream, then let's DREAM! :)

Ben-Hur would jump in front of a train if that happened... Win/win situation really

Let go Stu.

The signature and the obsessing are too much.

Move on.

Grow.

You're becoming too creepy even for me.

Biffo I know you're giving Stuie some tough love but you just have to give him more time. He has, after all, lost his only friend. He is obviously locked in the Denial/Anger stage of his grieving process.

And re the thread. After watching the NAB last night and, though rather surprised at both the outcome and the quality of the game, we seem a very long way off that pace. This season will satisfy a variety of curiosities I suspect.

If anything it has shown how quickly teams can change/develop (Brisbane)

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
