The Vince Lombardi Way

A little off track but I was at the gym the other day and they had a history of the NFL on one of the screens, CH 11.

The interesting bit was they were talking about Vince Lombardi - Google Him, basically the super-bowl trophy is named after him now.

He never had a losing season, but the most interesting part of the interviews of this players, was who he recruited, he took over the green bay packers after their worst season ever.

A bit like the Swans approach. Vince did not recruit the "best" or most "Skillful" players in the league. He recruited players that would always give their maximum effort for the team consistently every week and he could count on them to do their "role" within the team.

Its about the whole team approach and star players are the cream on top, not the reason for success, as within the team they become successful and stars within the league.

*Plus he did work them hard :)

When I'm having a shitty day at work I always take in a bit of Vince.

Mr Leadership.

We had our very own Vince Lombardi in Norm Smith. Both were larger than life figures who achieved significant results in their coaching careers. Both started at clubs other than those at which they made their names and ended elsewhere as well. Both died relatively young men, of cancer at age 57. Both are honoured by their respective competitions on the biggest day of their sport's year. We have the Norm Smith trophy on grand final day (best player) and they have the Vince Lombardi trophy (winning team at the Super Bowl).

In my estimation and in relative terms, Smith was the greater figure. We had the magical combination for well over a decade of Smith as coach and Barassi as the dominant player. Smith imbued all of the essential features of a successful side, hard work, dedication, loyalty and a fierce desire to win while Barassi carried them out on the field with a ferocity that has been virtually unmatched throughout the game's history.

When Barassi left for Carlton and Smith was sacked some months later, all of those attributes went from the club's make up and have to this day never re-appeared.

Very true WJ and they both of the same time period. It would have been great to get the two in a room together and listen.

The point is the NFL professionalism/tactics/sports theory has been far ahead of the AFL until recently and how the Neeld approach of roles and commitment over pure star quality can work in a professional environment.

Vince did nothing for the Packers leaky defense today and now my bears aren't in the play offs so you can stuff it!

Oh and don't think NFL professionalism is that great by the way. I read an article the other day that said most players go out and get hammered on a Friday night because they have all of Saturday off before playing on Sunday. That only works if you are Dane Swan in the AFL.

This may be another of those famous 'misquoted' quotes (like Play It Again Sam).

According to the Green Bay Packers quarterback of the '60s - Bart Starr - the words as really stated by Lombardi were 'Winning isn't everything, but making the effort to win is".

I preferred the quote "you show me a group of good losers and I'll show you a group of losers."

Or something very similar

don't let them get to our kids & dress them in silks & put them thru the MCC finishing school.

let them be footy players first & foremost.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
