This development makes me think that Pendlebury won't be headed up there. Moreover, I reckon Eddie did a deal with Sheeds and Gubby early last year. "Throw Melbourne and Scully under the bus for us (generating us a year's worth of publicity) and we'll lay off your stars Ed". Something like that.

I've always found the Sheedy-McGuire "feud" a tad too contrived.

Ed is the President of a club and a media commentator. I've no doubt he's used his position in the media to deflect situations away from his club. But to to allege that two clubs have conspired in such a way is absurd.

Yes, men in positions of power would never think to collude in such an unsavory manner

I AGREE - NOBODY SHOULD EVER READ OR POST ON THIS THREAD AGAIN!

Totally concur. Enough is plainly enough! Come on moderators close this thread forever. Would sooner read about present players than the past.

Bobby ... I'm going to post this for you and anyone else who keeps chiming in with this inane 'close the thread' nonsense.

Merriam-Webster have a nice, clear, concise definition of the word "option". Have a read ... http://www.merriam-w...ctionary/option

As in ... you have the option not to click on, open and read the thread. Cheers.

Ed had several players coming out of contract, it was in his best interests to divert attention away from this. There was already controversy over Melbourne, $cully & GWS. GWS didn't have to make an amnesty deal for media attention. The media hype was already there.

Not how I remember it but mine's just an opinion. We'll see at the end of the year. It will have been quite a remarkable feat for the Filth to have remained unscathed through both the GC and GW$ headhunting periods. Unless you count Josh Fraser as a 'big fish'.

Eddie's as shrewd as they come.

So is Sheeds....

So is Sheeds....

Agree but this news about Hurley being 'signed and sealed' has to cast doubt on Pendlebury going up there. You'd have to assume Hurley will/would be on massive coin if the report is true. Would there be enough left in the kick for what would surely be Pendles' astronomical asking price?

It just adds to the entertainment. A Pendles would be a huge get for GW$

Let's just sit back and observe.

GWS were always going to get their media attention, just like they are now. They don't need to make any deals to get more coverage.

And yes, it will be remarkable if the Pies can retain their top players, but they won't come away unscathed. The expansion clubs have already been used against them as a negotiating tool for contract talks. At the very least they may have to, or have already, pay more to keep their better players. This will be at the expense of some second and third tier players.

Yet you still post on it.

The OX has announced on SEN that Michael Hurley is off to GWS in 2013.

He was spot on with you know who.

Lets see how close he is with Hurley.

Evidently another $1 million a year.

I doubt the OX is that sure about Hurley. Maybe only 99.5%. Leaves, the element of doubt when Hurley is probably just waiting for the end of his contract before he negotiates a new one.

Wattsy is looking like a Gem!

i just hope the bummers spend all year bitching over it like we did

Pivital to Hirds balance & plans.

This could Rock they're boat, 'er', plane... seat belts on, we're entering turbulent Airspace. :)

they've already lost an AA HB flanker and P/bury's contract to deal with at years end )

Freedom of speech is permitted on this forum I believe? Just trying to end the 12 pages of utter crap that has been posted on this topic. Scully-- WHO CARES? Come on moderators people are now aimlessly repeating what has been said before.

I have absolutely no doubt were GW$ suddenly find themselves in need of cash, or salary cap space for that matter, "something" would "miraculously happen".

It just adds to the entertainment. A Pendles would be a huge get for GW$

And he would be an even greater "get" for MFC !!

Bob, who died and made you classroom monitor??

Invoking 'freedom of speech' whilst pressing the mods to shut a thread down so others can't exercise theirs goes beyond irony into the realm inanity.

The Tom Scully Affair and greater GW$/AFL saga from which it/he was spawned will remain a topic of interest among many Demon fans for a good while yet. Get used to it!

Don't take it for granted that Hurley is GWS's key forward target. The Herald Sun is reporting that their real aim is to snare a Magpie - Giant play for Collingwood's Travis Cloke.

Another HUN article on the many AFL players who are spurning the big money offers to remain loyal to their clubs [AFL stars turning down big-money moves] states that "Hurley, who knocked back an offer from the Suns, is also tipped to reject a spell-binding offer from GWS to remain at Essendon."

While nobody begrudges players the right to earn a fair whack from the sport, it's also refreshing to know that loyalty is still important to some players.

With the GWS benefits and free agency operating at the end of the year, it's going to be interesting to see how things pan out.

While the concession picks were the silver lining of the dark cloud of Tom's departure from Melb, being able to enjoy 2012 without fear and loathing about losing a player is another.

GWS stirring the pot at Collingwood and Essendon this season will also add a pleasant side note to the footy this year as well.

its pretty simple if u dont like the topic dont read it, im really enjoying this thread having dig at $cully and The GWS whilst talking a about rumours of essendon and collingwood stars being stolen from there clubs is great, im sure theres plenty of training reports you could read!

As long as the Scully discussion stays in this thread and stays (reasonably) nice there's no problems with it continuing IMO.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
