Hendrix really rated Terry Kath (the guitarist you are talking about). I loved this version of the band but couldn't stand the versions post Kath, fell asleep in their show at the bowl...so bland.

Kath accidentally shot himself unfortunately. Seem to remember a story of playing Russian roulette.

I'm a fan of "the living end" who started life as a Stray Cats cover band. 

I especially like when Chris Cheney does his guitar solo standing atop his bass players double bass.

Only one thing tops that - I saw the Stray Cats at the forum a few years back and the living end supported them. The living end joined the Cats  on stage. Both double bass players stood next to each other, tilting their instructments to about 45 degrees and Cheney and Setzer leaped onto them and proceeded to do an elevated ripping guitar duel.

 

Saw one of my favourite quirky performers on the weekend - Kate Miller Heidke  - her husband, Keir Nutall who plays with her is as fine a guitarist as you would see in this country.

Kate does heart tearing ballads and then launches into the quirky with her operatic voice and very original and witty lyrics.

At one stage she told a story of being dared to put a certain lyric into a song. Kate said she wouldn't tell us what the lyric was but we may notice it. Seamelessly, she managed to use the line " I touch my sausage purse" in the middle of a song.

She is very unaffected, funny and ultra talented.

 

On a different note - ( and still quirky) - seeing Steve Poltz tonight at the Caravan Club - if you get a chance to see him - do. He is fabulous. 

Damn, I forgot about this awesome thread. 

Who doesn't like watching a middle aged guy dancing awkwardly to metal? He does have a few credits in the bank for being one of the most talented musicians going around in the genre.

 

 

These guys are getting a bit of airplay on triple J and I was impressed when I saw them live late last year.

Watching a tribute on RAGE for Jon English and Ross Hannaford early this morning...

There are some clips that I just can't find on youtube, on the Hanna tribute their was one with Paul Hester that's a ripper...

...and a couple of months ago there was a live clip of the early pre Neil "Split Enz" doing a live version of "Stranger then Fiction". I really loved that pre Neil band probably more than the Neil band. Not knocking Neil though, I had a lot of time for Crowded House.

Does anyone know where you can get these clips or at least get to see them again???

If you love Primus, check out the Residents documentary "Theory of Obscurity",,, they were a massive influence on Primus and members of Primus feature during the documentary.

What does everyone think about Slash playing for ACDC?

I'm a bit torn. Guns'n roses one of my favourite bands ever. Likewise ACDC. Not sure this is a match made in heaven.

Slash isn't, Axl Rose is singing for them. I never rated Brian Johnstone anyway, so I'll just listen to it for the novelty factor. Bon Scott however, is a legend.

I seriously believe that AC/DC should have gone completely away from tired old "rockers" (Brian Johnson was bad enough in my opinion) and gone down the route of someone like Nikki Hill... (and her husband is no slouch on the guitar either)... I saw them at Bluefest 2014 and they took the roof off the place! (they were so impressive that Bluesfest had them back again the following year in 2015)

Same them last time around - they were great - played for almost 3 hours - ( Robert Smith has never worn shorts nor has ever felt sand between his toes).

I am going to an interesting gig on Saturday night  - The Brewster Brothers ( Angels ) are doing a introspective,  talking about their journey and in particular the journey of the Angels , interspersed with film clips and some documentary stuff and a little bit of live acoustic music from them.  Should be great.

Well.. i saw something that i didn't think i would ever see.

 

Saw the Brewster Brothers on Saturday night and it was about 2/3's music and the other third a "narrator" asking them questions. They covered their beginnings all the way through to present.

Rick Brewster spent his whole Angels carreer wearing the dark glasses and standing like a statue playing guitar - zero facial expressions. John Brewster talked about their beginnings and they started life in a jug band ! With that the two brothers  jumped off the stage with John playing guitar and Rick playing the washboard and (and harmonising vocals) jumping around banging on his washboard totally out of control.

As they finished a couple of songs. Rick just announced to the crowd " bet you never thought you'd see Rick Brewster doing that !" - he was dead right.

I actually saw them back then (I think at an ANU union night in Canberra in the 70's) when they were known as The Keystone Angels.  I thought they were great... wasn't so keen on the Angels though, I have to admit.  I'm pretty sure one of the former Angels (can't recall which one) has been working in the indigenous communities assisting with raising money for dialysis machines etc.

Just watched a trailer for that, i have never heard of the residents, and i think my sleeping behavior is happy for that!

Can't post any Steel Panther video's given the 'G' rated nature of the site but did enjoy them at Festival Hall on Saturday night...very PC incorrect but at least you know what you are getting into.

After a prompt...the crowd sang a couple of verses of Community Property before the band came in.

They go a bit over the top but they are a very good band when you strip it back to the music...

Pity, but I don't think they will be invited to do the AFL GF.

Apocalyptica are playing in Melbourne in September - I will be away unfortunately. They are 3 cello players and a drummer doing  metal. I have seen them before and they absolutely go off live - their live videos don't do them justice

No, and my partner declined (she knows the guys in the band and their manager drummer from Extreme in a previous life) although there were still plenty who did...

Amazing what people will do.
