Well we are going over well worn ground but the issue is our good mature players aren't that good. Green, Moloney, Sylvia and Davey who should be providing a bit of grunt, particularly through the midfield are just ordinary footballers.

Green has wrung the most anybody could have reasonably expected out of his ability. That he is now being vilified by supporters is depressing and shows how little they understand.

Davey has never been someone who could lead when things got tough. Moloney is another "Green", but he's younger and given a tag free opportunity can play well. But for all his possessions he rarely hurts the opposition which is why he's a good ordinary footballer and not an top notch A grader. And Sylvia is just too inconsistent to be a top liner but his best is probably our best. Jamar has been injured since Adelaide (he doesn't seem to be able to jump at the moment) and for me Rivers has been our best mature player. People don't give credit to our defense. It goes in there quickly and regularly and it's not surprising that at times it just breaks open.

Agree with these statements Fan. It still holds true that your best six win you matches and it is no suprise that a fit Cox, Kerr, Embley and Glass has seen a massive spike in West Coasts fortunes. I am not a massive fan of Rivers but his year is seriously under rated by most. I agree on Green that he has got the most out of his ability. However most of the criticism of Green this year is unrelated to his ability and more so some traits that he shows that exemplify the selfish and soft side of our football club. Being made captain in such a frustrating year has not helped his cause.

I think that the loss of Grimes and Bail for most of the year has damaged more than most understand. I look at this potentially as the year we had to have as long as the right decisions are made at seasons end on coach and list management. I really do hope we hang in there, dont look for the quick fix and be patient with the direction we've taken. As frustrating as it can be I still think it is the correct way if we are to win a premiership.

Agree our defence is our bright spot. As you say we need a hard bodied mid or two to turn things around. Oh how I wish we had been harder on Ferguson and virtually forced his move to the Hawks. Then we would be far better off with Sewell in our mid field instead of the 1 extra nothing year we got from Ryan.

On another note and this will bring howls I am sure. I would consider trading Jamar home to Port for Butcher and even another lesser player like Maric, Bate to get the deal done. That would give us the big players we need up forward with Cook, McDonald and Fitzy to come. Rationale is Jamar is getting towards 30 and we have Martin, Gawn, Spencer, Fitzpatrick, the shorter McDonald who has rucked and Campbell rookied. The younger ones need developing and we are not a flag contender for at least a couple of years. The first 4 are genuine rucks and not all can play there or in the same team. It is an area that hopefully we will be ok in. Also Jamar often seems to be injured and has a foot problem, that won't go away. A forward line of Watts and maybe no one else as a tall forward is not a winning combination. Butcher, Watts, Jurrah and one of the rucks resting forward with Howe, Petterd, Sylvia etc is a good forward line. That would leave only the mid field for improvement. OK everyone start screaming.

I'd be trading any and all of Jamar, Sylvia and Petterd. Perhaps not all in one compromised draft year, but I would look to move them all. Thry'd get us something worthwhile. Anyone from port worth stealing?

Read my post number 498 and think of meat.

Redleg, I was wondering about meat and maybe some midfield potatoes...

Open to suggestions.

Butcher was the meat, Salopek could be a spud.

Read my post number 498 and think of meat.

Your 2 contrasting forward lines are Watts and no one, as opposed to Watts and a lot of players we already have, plus Butcher.

So we only need one player to complete our forward line, then it's a winner?

What about Lucas Cook? He's shown just as much as Butcher, in my eyes

If you think Cook with his displays at Casey has shown as much as Butcher in the worst side in the AFL kicking 6 goals, then we are on a completely different page. That is not to say that Cook won't improve but at the moment he has shown nothing IMO. In fact at Skilled Stadium I saw him pull out twice and then he was dropped to the reserves. Butcher is a year older also and could turn out to be a top player.

As for the forward line I said that Watts at the moment was the only tall forward we have, but that others might come on. If Butcher came to us we would have two good talls right away plus any others that come on. Pretty simple really.

Needs more ground, he is being trained to stay. Hopefully Le Beau Cheval does better saturday.

Could not see it in the fields at Belmont RL was it scratched?

Interesting to look at the players featured on the Demonland banner. Three are not playing, three are in poor form and only Chip is going well. Maybe that goes part of the way to explaining our current situation.

I am sure you are correct redleg

I have been saving for most of the season that it is our more snior players that have let the side down.

The kids are probably doing as well as expected at this point.

I also agree with your earlier comment I am enjoying this year a lot less than 8-09.

Cook also worries me not sure what is going on there, I am not buyong it is a long season for a young guy.

You normally have to hold them back, young guys are usually busting to play.

eg last year when we had to rest you know who and Trengove half way through the season in spite of them thinking

they were ok.

I doubt I have looked forward to the end of a season more than this year.

Baby sitting tonight, I can forget the bloody MFC for a few hours.

He ran at Newcastle. Ran terribly. Trainer said he thinks he is a porn star and wants to mount every other horse and was going nuts and now he will lose them.

What do you base that on?

Cook is playing Casey Seconds and in fact over the last two weeks hasn't played and isn't on the injury list, not sure what's going on there. Someone said he's injured as he didn't play at Casey last week; well if he is then why isn't he on our injured list?

Butcher is playing AFL and has a bag of 6 to his name so where's the comparison?

Well just as well I messed up.

Could not see a TAB meeting for Newcastle and assumed Belmont was the belmont near Newcastle.

But of course it was Belmont WA.

Guess who is a dill!

Lovely day for the footy. Hope the Dees fans turn up, as it is historic, being the first Dees game against the Suns on the G. As it is our last home game for the year there should be a fair turnout. The other factor that may influence some of the softer fans is that we have a chance to win. Note I didn't say we would win but that we had a chance to win.

Who are you again!!!

And very glad I bet!

Well that's it then. One game to watch on TV and support Casey in the finals.

Me too Redleg.

That must have been the least satisfying win in 5 years.

Not sure I can raise any enthusiasm for the Port game.

Casey for me to end the Footy season.

Cannot get to the Basketball and spring racing season quick enough.

If I hear nothing on the bloody MFC in the next 2 months that will be fine.

Keep the horse info coming Redleg.

Have a good spring.

I think you will hear plenty on the MFc in the next 2 months, some good and some bad.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
