It's his decision to go of course, which I fully respect. But if he goes I will be mighty disappointed that we chose him over Martin who is just as good and is happy to stay at the club that drafted him for less money.

Isn't it possible that if one didn't look at ANY offers until end of 2011 that GWS may have signed their marquee players elsewhere and the treasure chest is somewhat depleted, so the really BIG money is gone?

Seems to me leaving it late may be just that - too late

Just some thoughts

I wonder that as well, they didn't contact him during the period they had the ability to sign players last year so is he really on their radar??? Obviously he must be but that struck me as strange.

When I find myself doubting whether or not Scully is staying or going I try and look at it this way.

People in the media who say Scully is going:

Sheehan,

Schwarz,

Maguire,

Maher.

People in the media who seem to think Scully will stay:

Pickering,

Wilson,

Robinson.

Throw in Dean Bailey and every Melbourne player who has fronted the media about the issue, including Scully and I'd like to think the people in the staying list are far more credible then those in the going list.

Maybe he's also waiting to see who else GWS can attract?

Doubt he'd want to go there, regardless of how good the money is, if he thinks he'll be playing out his career with D grade amateurs from the Western Sydney League and Brendan Fevola.

There is a limit to how much he'd be willing to [censored] himself I'd assume.

I think whether they sign a star or two along the way, they will still have plenty of money to hand over and plenty to trump our offer with, so I don't think that would be a major concern. And besides, maybe he wasn't on their radar last season when they thought they could grab a Pendelbury or a Swan or a Thomas or a Murphy. As much as I think Scully will be a gun, he hasn't proven himself beyond doubt and he has had some injury concerns. GWS would be stupid to put all of their money into his basket, especially given that he isn't a marquee name yet. I doubt anyone in Western Sydney even knows who he is!

I think The tigea pay martin in the vicinity of 700,000 per year. Hot bad for "less money" as you put it

Oh ok my fault your arguing the middle ground, how could I be so silly not to realise.

You offered Pav as example clearly he negotiates before end of season.

You say it's strategy - all it does is effect the amount of scrutiny on himself and his team see Geelong

I don't think that member speculation is at fault here I reckon when those in the game say he's gone and

especially a former great of the club in Schwartz says he's gone and he's convinced the circumstantial evidence

reaches critical mass and can't be ignored.

98% gone is what he said - Schwartz wouldn't so dramatically increase speculation unless he was sure.

Now I'm not some sort of Sav who floggs themselves senseless whenever they get a sniff of something going wrong at MFC

But Schwartz being convinced of his departure is enough on balance to make me believe he's gone.

If he stays I'll retract it all.

I'll be glad to wrong

I'm not saying he's a bad bloke or that he's lied

Just think at some the potential deal at GWS has been too good

I think the OX works for the media rather than an ex great coming out and saying. G.Lyon maybe a little different.

My issue is I'm 98% sure nothing has been decided on but all these sources are confirming it.

I think he wants to stay at Melbourne but I think if GWS are as interested as the media says they are (see previous post about not making an offer last year) then I think he will go as well

What the Ox said today just doesn't quite add up.

If he has an impeccable source wouldn't Jimma and Todd Viney be in the know as well?

i just do not get it!!!

Theo x is full of it, Scully can't sign up until the end of the season. HoA, yes, but he can change his mind.

Why are there so many people on this site who are desperate to believe that he's going?

But why would the Ox say it?? If he is wrong he will look like a real dill.

I have met Dave a couple of times, and i am really suprised that he did it.

Time will tell. Hopefully tomorrow Tom & the whole team have a cracker game.

Melbourne supporters have always looked for excuses as to why we aren't a contender and if Scully leaves, this will give us 10 years worth of material to use amongst our friends and co-workers.

Schwarta's comments are those of the gambler who matter-of-factly assumes he knows what his opponent's hand is, even though he really has no idea. The next stage is to implant this belief in the rest of us sitting around the table.

Love the bloke but it wouldn't be the first time he's been wrong.

TS hasn't signed a contract yet, no idea what will happen at the end of the year but he is not gone as of now.

I kick myself everytime I open this thread

i tend to agree with you, but the Ox sat on "Hollywood Boulevard" in our changeroom with Jimma Garry & Todd. They were all pretty tight.

Maybe things have changed but i would be suprised...

This is a stretch, but bear with me...

I actually think, in David Schwarz's mind, that he is trying to help the club.

He can't possibly know which way Scully is even leaning.

The Ox would be the last to find out, and if he knew the entire club would know, down to the boot-studder (do they still have those?).

I think what Schwarz is trying to do is shift the focus from "will he / won't he?" to "he is going - what will the compensation be?" in an effort to get better compensation in the event Scully does go.

I just don't see how he'd even know, and if he did, why he'd make these claims, because they certainly don't help the club he cares about the most.

The motive for his actions doesn't compute.

What being honest doesn't compute? Or maybe dishonesty computes?

I think the Enemy of peoples goodwill and emotions and goodspirits, is secrecy and deceipt. That is what these big money offers bring to all footy followers, and our game. Distrust, deception and Disenchantment !

I wonder if David (OX), just believes in Openess, and honest Loyalty? That this is the way he believes things are best for Melbourne loyalists.

The hysteria is consuming us. It's frightening.

I think a few need to have a little faith in the club.

The media keep saying he's going simply because he hasn't signed with us and it's a great story. We've got 12 weeks as a club to prove to Tom that this is the place to be. In my opinion this is what he is waiting to see. He wants to play football in the most professional environment possible to give himself the opportunity to become the absolute best he can be. Money will not be his prime motivation for moving. I for one will be shocked if he leaves, there's too much good stuff happening around our club. However if he looks at GWS and thinks it'll be better for his football to go there then go there he will.

Someone quotes this on another site and I thought it was worth re reading again.

From the press conference;

"I love the club, I love my teammates and I want to be part of the future going ahead at the Melbourne Football Club. I'm sure my teammates have full trust in me."

"There has been no approach, absolutely not. And I definitely haven't spoken to GWS and most certainly haven't signed anything, certainly not. If I did have an approach the club would be the first to know. I have been transparent with the club."

"I want to repay the club for showing faith in me. They have been very understanding and me and Dean (Bailey) have a great relationship," said Scully.

"I'm a contracted Melbourne player and I'm absolutely loving my time at the club. I want to get the best outcome for the Melbourne footy club.

"I have full confidence the club and my management will work through the contract in due course."

"I'd love to end my career and say I was a one-club player and I anticipate that will be the case,"

If you're a money grubbing [censored]...

Of course that was the point

If you were wanting the max money from GWS you wouldn't leave it to the eoy without talking to them beforehand

Scully says he hasn't talked to anyone at GWS

If you believe him then this makes it less likely he'll go to gws

On the other hand, he only needs to 'talk' to his manager to effectively 'deal' with GWS

P.S. I don't have a clue which way he is thinking

Ah, very insightful comment BD

"98% sure" is an expression of speculation. In other words, he is speculating because he has heard something. If he was "sure", then he would be "sure". In other words,100%. I read the Ox's comments as more hearsay.

Once again I feel the need to address a few points.

Why would a media personality put it out there that he is leaving when they will have egg on their fave if he stays? Surely they must know something to be saying that?

No, not really. If they put it out that he is leaving and he messes up their story and stays, they will simply deny that they ever said he was gone. Remember that one of the primary excuses many of these people have been using to justify their claims is that every player linked to GC last year went. This is 100% incorrect, but if they keep making the claim then people will eventually believe them. Likewise, should Tom stay with us it will simply not be mentioned again. They will start another self-congratulatory tale about how accurate their guesses were and conveniently forget that they had ever spread such an outlandish rumour.

Somewhat linked to the above point is the fact that GC made a play for several Melbourne players, or indeed the media said they were moving north, and amazingly none of them left. James Frawley, Ricky Petterd and Cale Morton were all rumoured to be signing with them (by the infallible media) at various times, and every one of them stayed with us.

All in all, I am disinclined to believe any of the hoard of media hacks who want to get in on the feeding frenzy and voice an opinion. There are two people who I will listen to regarding the future of Tom Scully, and I seriously doubt either Tom or his Manager will be telling us the answer until the season is over. Until then, it's all unfounded rumour ans idle speculation.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
